“Where were you?” my mom asks.

“Shower,” I reply, catching the evil smirk that creeps onto Noah’s face. I glare back at him. “Had to wash off the chlorine.”

Mom nods, her smile sweet as she flips open pizza boxes to tuck under the lids. She puts them out on the kitchen island, like she used to when we were younger.

“Where’s Carly?” Noah pins me with his gaze, the motherfucker knowing exactly where Carly is.

“She’s in the shower now,” I reply, my face completely neutral. If being in the military teaches you anything, it’s not to break under pressure. If being a SEAL teaches you anything, it’s to flip that pressure around on the person giving it to you.

“So Noah, how’s Kristin doing?”

Noah and his most recent girlfriend broke up over a month ago and he hasn’t told my parents. They were huge fans of her, especially after what happened with Ashley.

His smirk falls and I see him give me a subtle middle finger before turning back on the charm.

“Oh, you know how it is. Sweet girl like that, she had other things she wanted to do with her life. She’s moving to Texas for grad school, I think.”

I grit my teeth. If there’s one thing my parents think is amazing, it’s going to fucking college.

“How wonderful for her!” my mom coos, setting a stack of paper plates next to the boxes of pizza that smell so good. “Too bad it couldn’t have worked out long distance, though.”

Noah nods, an agreeably contrite expression on his stupid face. “Absolutely.”

He doesn’t give a flying fuck about Kristin going to fucking grad school. Susie told me Kristin caught Noah cheating and bashed in his windows while he was screwing a client in the back of his SUV.

“Huh,” I say. “I thought I heard something about you seeing someone else.”

He shakes his head. “Nope. I’m not seeing anyone important.”

I nod my head, walking over to the kitchen and grabbing a glass to fill with water. “Saw you were driving a gray Honda. Having car problems?”

Noah’s nostrils flair, but that’s his only tell. “You know, had a little fender bender about a month ago and I’m getting it worked on. Thanks for asking.”

My dad drops the corner of the paper down. “Nothing too serious, right? I’d hate for you to get injured, especially since your body is your livelihood.”

Noah waves away the concern. “Oh no, everything’s fine.” Then he looks back at me. “So how long have you been dating Carly?”

“They’re not dati…”

“Not too long.”

My sister and I speak at the same time, and our eyes fly to each other, the surprise evident in hers. Surprise and… upset.

Shit.

“Really?” mom says, clasping her hands together in front of her chest. “I didn’t realize. I just thought she was friends with Susie. You know, I think she’s just adorable.”

I give my mom a tight smile, instantly regretting my words, then serve her a slice of pizza.

“And after everything that’s…” she clears her throat on an awkward pause that’s felt by everyone in the room.
