They listed about a dozen names, kids of some of the most prominent and influential people in Devilbend. Business people, politicians, celebrities. Interestingly, neither of the Mead sisters was on the list, despite their parents being very rich and connected.

Easton: So you’re admitting that you work for BestLyf then?

Ocean1k: Just do what you’re told.

Easton: This is beyond unethical. These are kids!

Ocean1k: Get off your high horse, Mr. Monroe. They’re only kids when it suits you.

I frowned, momentarily confused by the message, but then an image came through. It was a perfectly framed nighttime shot, the glass railing reflecting the lights of Devilbend below. But the focus was me and Harlow—kissing. Wrapped up in each other. Holding each other as though we were one another’s oxygen supply and we were a thousand feet below the surface.

I simultaneously wanted to throw my phone across the room and print the image out so I could frame it.

It was taken from below, probably from the bushes that lined the path near the edge of the cliff. Where was Coach Cooper during this time? I’d hardly even bothered to notice he was there that night. Was it possible he wasn’t working alone? Now that he’d all but confirmed his involvement with BestLyf, there was no telling what kind of resources he had at his disposal.

The bell sounded, and I gathered my things. I needed to get to my first class and teach freshmen American literature. Joy. There was no time to dwell on the panic and despair. I had to pretend everything was fine. I’d been doing that for much longer than I cared to admit, so it shouldn’t be that hard. Except I was reaching my limit.

No further messages came in from Ocean1k—he knew he had me.

Two steps forward and two steps back.

Despite my decision to avoid Dale until I could think his name without scowling, he found me anyway. I just wanted one day to get my shit together, so despite the fact that our paths hardly ever crossed at work, I’d gone off campus for lunch. I’d never seen anyone from Fulton at the little vegetarian café I sometimes went to, but as I finished my meal, in strolled Dale fucking Cooper.

I lowered the last spoonful of vegetable tagine back to the bowl and picked up my novel, forcing my face not to show my hate for the man stepping up to the counter and ordering a protein shake in an obnoxiously loud voice. I prayed he wouldn’t notice me, but the place was tiny.

“Hey! Monroe!” He made his way over and took a seat in the chair opposite.

I gritted my teeth and forced a surprised smile onto my face before lowering my book. “Dale. Hello.”

“Nice place, huh?” He looked around as if it were his café and he was proudly showing it off.

“Yep. They do a great veggie lasagne.” Please, for the love of god, just leave before I stab you in the eye with this fork.

“Didn’t even know it was here until one of the boys on the football team told me about it.
