Chapter Ten

James drove down the mountain, surprised by its eerie silence. The explosions had all but stopped aside from a few bursts here or there. He turned a corner, almost sliding on loose gravel. At some point, he needed to upgrade the tires of the Claw. Probably sooner rather than later. He approached the narrow entrance to the town after passing what seemed like an eternity of smokey horizons and fires burning in the distance. The toxic, choking scent of death loomed in the air. God, what a mess.

He finally made it into the city, the odd, creepy silence replaced with the sounds of agony and chaos. Minor gunfire sounded nearby. Possibly cops, James thought – unless it was someone else, or a whole group of people. He passed a post office, its interior ablaze with hungry, ravenous fire. A couple people ran in and out of the building, panicked. He sped past the scene, focused on Claire’s apartment.

He had to get there. Beth wouldn’t forgive herself if Claire was left to die out in the wake of Armageddon. He tried to put an image together of Claire in his head: she was a little taller than Beth with long, dark, brunette hair. Green or brown eyes (James couldn’t recall). She had similar features, though: wide hips, larges breasts. While Beth had a soft, round face, Claire did not. Her cheeks and chin were thinner, sharper and more catlike. Her lips, red and crimson, were still just as full.

She was equally as gorgeous. Beth, surprisingly, was a Goth girl. James wouldn’t have guessed that from their encounters, but now it made perfect sense. The corset she wore on their first night together only made those attributes permanent. But what about Claire? Aside from the surface appearances, James didn’t know anything about her, didn’t know if his memory was playing tricks on him.

He passed a group of civilians screaming at each other, a few engaged in a physical altercation. A cart of items nearby made James suspect it was over some sort of resource. Food, maybe? Ammunition? Could be. He thought for a minute. How had people so quickly devolved into enraged sociopaths? It had been maybe a few days or two since the first attack.

If it even was an attack. Garbled transmissions… communications blackout… military forces… rabid people…

Something was wrong. He didn’t know what and hopefully would never know exactly what started all of this. The city was, at least, in decent shape aside from a burning building or two. There weren’t mass riots in the streets. A lot of people probably fled, leaving behind belongings. James’ guess was the few fights he’d seen on his way to Claire’s were probably the town crazies anyway.

Or at least he hoped.

There was no telling if an attack was going to happen again. If another carpet bombing took place, the airstrike would come without warning. And that could be any minute, James reminded himself.

He pressed on the accelerator, squealing as he drove into the apartment complex’s parking lot.
