Legends over Lemonade. Tuesday, August 25th 1508hrs

I hated where my mind was trying to go as I drove back into Bowery Lake. More than that, I hated that I wanted to call Poppy to tell her about everything that was going on. I had some crazy theories going on in my head and I was sure she’d not only agree with them but do everything she could to convince me that I was correct.

And that’s the last thing I needed right now. In fact, I was hoping that some quick internet research back at the Bowery Lake Bed and Breakfast would blow some of those theories apart.

When I arrived, it appeared that I was the only guest on the premises. Then again, for all I knew, I was the only guest; perhaps the elderly couple I’d run into in the morning had checked out. The foyer was quiet and peaceful as I stepped inside. Something new was baking in the kitchen, and I was greeted with what I thought smelled a bit like tomatoes and basil. Apparently, dinner was going to be Italian in nature tonight.

Ms. Hart called out from somewhere beyond the foyer walls—from the kitchen, I assumed. “Hello? Is someone there?”

I walked through the sitting room and then into the kitchen, where the aroma of whatever she was cooking seemed to find the hunger switch in my stomach and flipped it on. Ms. Hart was placing a few small spice containers into her cabinet while dinner was cooking away in the oven.

“Just me,” I said. “Didn’t mean to startle you.”

“Not startled, just curious.” She smiled widely as she shut the cabinets and turned to face me. “How’s your day been?”

It was a surprisingly complicated question, so I kept my answer vague. “Fine.”

She smirked and shook her head. “Your eyes and that thin scowl on your face say otherwise. Then there’s the bruise, of course, but I’ll be polite and not ask about that. Is everything okay, Mr. Corey?”

I shrugged and answered as honestly as I could without being rude. “I guess today just didn’t turn out the way I was hoping. That’s all.”

She seemed to study me for a moment and then nodded as if she understood perfectly. “Sorry to hear that. But you know, I think I have the remedy. I was just about to brew up some homemade lemonade.” She grabbed a small bag of lemons from a nearby bowl as if I needed proof. “And my lemonade is pretty darn good if I do say so myself. Why don’t you stick around and have a glass? Maybe it’ll cheer you up.”

“I was about to head up to the room to do a bit of research, but thank you all the same.”

“Oh, it takes time to brew up to perfection, dear. It’ll be twenty minutes or so before it’s done. Why don’t you head on up and I’ll call you down when it’s ready.”

“That sounds great,” I said, though it really didn’t. It was just my weak spot: an inability to say no to an old lady who was clearly only trying to be kind.
