CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Taryn walked out the French doors and immediately spotted Larkin amongst the crowd. He flashed her a beautiful smile, then blew her a kiss as he continued tossing the football with some of their guests. She found Keiryn sitting next to their dad on a bench, watching Lucan and Gideon Skye play a round of horseshoes against Ibrym’s father and uncle. He gave her a slight nod and then motioned toward the pool to where Nalani lounged about at the water’s edge.

Walking in the girl’s direction, Taryn greeted everyone along the way. Many pulled her into fierce hugs while others gave her quick pecks on the cheek. Finally making it to the pool, she took a seat next to the beautiful girl and dangled her feet into the cool water.

Nalani glanced up from staring at the rippling water and grinned. “If only you had a cellphone, I could have warned you about everyone being extra huggy today.”

“Now what fun would that have been?” she retorted.

Glancing in Keiryn’s direction, Nalani wrinkled her nose, her eyes now locked on Taryn. “I know something happened between the two of you. Something rather significant, I would guess. Whatever it was, is it better now?”

Taryn shrugged. “I’m not sure it’s better, but it certainly isn’t any worse.”

Nalani lifted her legs from the pool, turning to face her friend. “He’s a bit of a mess, and I want to help. But as much as I hate to admit it, I think you’re the only one who can make things better for him this time.”

“I know, and I’ll try. But right now, I need to be present for our entire family and focus on them,” she replied.

“Fair enough,” Nalani smiled, looking past her friend. Spotting Kellan and Gerrick attempting to sneak up behind them, she shook her head as a warning.

Gerrick lunged forward first, followed by Kellan. “In you go, Kansas!” he shouted.

Anticipating the two boys’ attempt to push her into the pool, Taryn discreetly spread her fingers, creating a long rope out of the water. Before they could lay a hand on her, the two teens were lassoed and pulled into the pool.

Surfacing, Gerrick slapped his hands against the water. “Come on, Kansas. Can’t we get you at least once?” he moaned.

She shook her head. “You have to earn those stripes before you can wear them, brother,” she teased.

Swimming to the nearby edge, Kellan pulled himself out of the water, splashing both girls as he exited. He glanced back at Gerrick who was still treading water and laughed. “I think that’s as good as it’s going to get with her.”

•••••

Sitting down in one of the lounge chairs, Taryn kicked her feet up on an opposing seat. She smiled fondly as her family lined up and filled their plates with a variety of food items. Andyn and Sydney, Alderyc and Ibrym’s young female cousin, had their heads together as they filed through the line. Keiryn stood watch as his pack members went ahead of him and Nalani.
