Chapter Fourteen

GILLY DIDN’T KNOW HOW to respond. She’d distrusted her uncle from the beginning, at first because of his role as prosecutor in Solomon’s trial. But after their meeting, she’d gone away thinking there was something the prince wasn’t being completely honest about.

And now I know I was right.

“I thought I had it all,” Melindra said wistfully. “My abilities were valued, envied even. Few Fae possess foresight, and even fewer have the ability to prophesize. I felt special, even more so when Eddard turned his attention to me. Dreams of spending my life by his side, sharing his crown and his responsibilities, having a family of children that looked like their father, they flooded my mind, leaving room for little else.”

“What happened with my mother?” Gilly asked, impatient to know how things had unfolded back then. What exactly had led to her mother’s exile and the revelation of the prophecy of the coming apocalypse?

“There was something about the infant your uncle could not stand,” Melindra revealed. “From the beginning, I could tell he didn’t like his sister. At first, I chalked it up to his annoyance with all things babies. Incessant crying, babbling at all hours, you know. Sometimes the male of the species isn’t the most nurturing.”

“Sometimes the male is spoiled and unwilling to share the spotlight,” Gilly muttered in response, remembering how her uncle had preened in front of his audience.

Melindra nodded sadly. “I realized that might be the truth, as your mother grew up into an adorable little girl and Eddard hated her with a passion. He was still my handsome, dashing prince, but there was a sliver of darkness in him, a sliver I overlooked for far too long.”

Gilly looked on, trying to keep her temper intact, but Melindra cut such a pathetic figure, it was hard not to feel sorry for the woman. Her voice broke when she spoke again. “I was a fool, too in love with him to see that he was using me. It wasn’t until he revealed his diabolical plan that I had doubts, but he was so charming, he convinced me that we were in love. I would do anything for him, and that was my downfall.”

“Please,” Gilly said, leaning forward and putting her hand on Melindra’s arm. “Tell me what he did to my mother. What he did to his own family.”

“It would be easier to show you,” she said with a sniff. Their hostess leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes, her fingers gripping the armrests. Mist began filling the room, and Solomon tensed and took up a fighting stance, ready for whatever might happen. But it wasn’t a fight that was about to break out, but a journey back in time.

The mist surrounded them, turning the world white. “It was the night of the Harvest Moon Ball.” Melindra’s voice carried through the mist, and suddenly the whiteness resolved itself into an image of the palace ballroom, decorated in its characteristic over-the-top fashion.
