“You’re lying!” I jumped up from the couch. “What the hell are you even saying, that she’s a succubus?”

“I assure you I am no liar,” Eliza spoke firmly though her eyes didn’t lose their gentleness. “Incubi can only turn those who have the specific blood type required to do so. For those who do not have the required blood type for turning into a succubus, they generally will kill or ensnare. Your co-worker has been ensnared. It’s a common practice for incubi to mark women they can’t turn and then do a sort of brainwashing on them. They visit the ensnared in dreams and make suggestions or spy on them through their connection. After Selander Ryan ensnared Gina he more than likely spied on her through the connection and the moment she interacted with you at your place of work, he sensed your blood.”

“How could he sense my blood by watching another person? Wouldn’t he have to be close to me?”

“He wasn’t spying on her through binoculars, Danni. He was using the link he created with her. It would allow him to sense what she sensed, to use her eyes, nose, and ears, if you will.”

My heart felt as if it might beat right out of my chest and my head swam as I plopped back down onto the couch and recalled every memory I could dredge up about Gina. I’d worked with her for so long and she’d always been promiscuous and extremely flirtatious, but she’d never been catty with me. She’d never seemed to have any hidden agenda with me either, and the recommendation to go to The Midnight Rider didn’t seem odd either. I’d had a bad day and she recommended a bar for drinks like friends and co-workers all over the country routinely did. Sure, she hadn’t shown up, but Gina was flighty and her top priority was always men so her choosing a date with a guy over hanging out with an upset co-worker wasn’t that odd for someone like her. “Wait. Gina recommended I go to The Midnight Rider. If Selander Ryan was controlling her and making her do this, why would he choose The Midnight Rider out of all the bars she could have suggested I go to? If he wanted to turn me at first, wouldn’t it make more sense for him to do it in a bar not owned by a vampire who happens to also be his enemy?”

“You’re thinking like a logical, sane person. Selander Ryan has not been a logical, sane person for a long time, if ever. He’s very vengeful and snagging a woman out of Rider’s bar and turning her in the alley behind it would be a slap in Rider’s face.”

“But he knew there was a chance Rider would know and stop him. Rider could have killed him.”

“That’s part of the game.”

“The game? The game?” I stood again and paced the floor, flexing the fingers I wanted to wrap around Eliza’s neck as she sat there so calmly telling me all this crap had happened to me because of some stupid game.
