Lucretius and Darwin, as Jonas indicates, are far more philosophically compatible with existential thought than with any form of teleological conception. Consequently, the (at least) apparent incompatibility between mechanistic evolution and an ordered universe uncovers that such theories as non-theistic intelligent design as well as theistic evolution contain within themselves strange philosophical self-contradictions that might cause one to inquire as to the reason any secularist should need to perceive intelligent design, and that any theist should turn to the evolutionary engine.
