Destiny is wide-eyed as we walk up the cement stairs to the front door of my house. “You guys are loaded…” she trails off, her eyes darting all around.

I look over at her. “Money has never been an obstacle.”

“Who talks like that?” she says, her mouth hanging open. “Oh, I get it…rich people.” She scrunches her nose up for effect.

I shake my head then knock on the door. It’s weird knocking on your own front door, but now that Clarke has moved in, it feels like the appropriate thing to do. This isn’t my home anymore; it’s their home.

My father gasps, surprised as the door swings open. “Topher! We weren’t expecting you until next week.” His eyes travel away from me and over to Destiny. “Oh, and you brought someone. What is your name, darling?”

Destiny’s eyes shift between my father and his boyfriend, who is standing beside him. Something is running through her brain. “No fucking way.”

My neck jerks as my head spins around, and I’m staring so hard I might pop a vein. “Destiny,” I say calmly.

She looks back at me and then her face falls. “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m Destiny.” She shakes my father’s hand awkwardly.

My father shoots me a concerned look. I shrug with a smile. I hope he gives her a chance to redeem herself.

“Well, are you going to let us in or are you going to make us stand out here all day?” I ask, semi-annoyed.

“Come in, come in,” my father says, ushering us into the house.

I watch as Destiny stops in her tracks, her eyes growing wide and her mouth falling open. I don’t go around flaunting our money, but I know we have it. I know how impressive our home is. Portland Monthly appraised it one time and the article they printed stated it was worth $3.5 million.

Destiny starts twirling around like a little girl in a candy store. It’s actually a little adorable.

“Come on, I want to show you something.” I grab her hand and begin leading her toward the large staircase.

“Really, Topher?” my father asks, irritated.

“Sorry, Dad, we just need to grab something and we’ll be right down. Give us a few.” I just need to grab my accountant’s number, schmooze a little with the parental units, and then bounce.

I follow Destiny up the stairs, and my eyes memorize the way her butt sways in her jeans, the way the jeans hug her so tightly. I haven’t brought a girl back here, to this room, since…

My arousal lasts mere seconds before it’s gone because of my guilt. I shouldn’t be bringing her up here. This was our place. This isn’t right.

Destiny flips on my light switch and strolls through the door, her eyes taking in my walls. She fixates on a big portrait I have on the side of my wall. It’s a picture of Ciera out in a field of green grass. She’s wearing a strapless white dress with a brown belt and cowgirl boots. Her short blond hair is whipping around her face.
