As Noa and Kyomi explored the island, they found a large lake fed by a beautiful waterfall. Without speaking, they dove in. The cool water washed over them, soothing their aches and cleaning away the remnants of the storm’s fury.

Afterward, they lay on the soft grass by the lake’s edge, drying off under the warm sun. It was a deceptively peaceful moment, though hunger gnawed at Noa’s stomach.

“It is quite beautiful for a death island,” she mused, her eyes trailing over the glittering lake, noticing the moment a single drop disturbed the stillness of the water.

“It is…” Kyomi began, but her words fell away as her gaze fixed on something in the distance.

Seeing the crease in her brow and the squint of her eyes, Noa followed her line of sight. At first, all she saw was a small blur on the horizon, easily dismissible. But then it grew larger, taking the shape of a figure sprinting toward them.

Kyomi opened her mouth to ask who it might be, but before the words could leave her lips, a voice, raw and desperate, ripped through the air.

“RUN!”

Instinct kicked in, and Noa sprang to her feet, spinning on her heel to dash in the opposite direction. She registered two sets of footsteps pounding behind her, but she dared not turn around.

The sky darkened without warning, a low rumble of thunder rolling ominously overhead. Moments later, the first cold droplets of rain began to fall, quickly building into a relentless downpour.

Noa’s surroundings became a blur of green as she dashed through the forest, rain-soaked trees whipping past her, leaves slick underfoot. Her breath came in ragged bursts, and only when her legs could carry her no further did she slow, coming to a shaky stop.

Rainwater streamed down her face, mingling with the sweat on her skin. For a fleeting moment, she dared to hope that whatever had been chasing them had finally given up. But before she could even catch her breath, something collided with her from behind, sending her sprawling to the ground.

Dazed, she looked up to see Kelda’s familiar face, smeared with mud. She couldn’t utter a word before the realisation hit—monstrous wolves were charging toward them.

The ground seemed to tremble beneath their thunderous approach, paws pounding with a force that sent shockwaves through the earth. These were no ordinary wolves; even from a distance, their enormous size was chilling—each one easily twice as large as Ezekiel.

All three of them scrambled to their feet while Noa frantically assessed their options. She searched for anything that could offer even a glimmer of hope—some narrow path or crumbling tree, something to slow the creatures down. But the forest around them was dense and unfamiliar. Running would only delay the inevitable; they’d be torn down one by one with no chance of survival.

“There must be something we can use to fight them off,” Kelda said, snatching a stick from the ground and wielding it like a weapon.

“There are too many of them,” Noa replied. “Even one would be a challenge.
