Chapter 118

The Tunnel

A cheerful, whistling worker casually walked to a German blockade on the crossing from a small town to a railroad tunnel leading to Salerno. “Heil Hitler,” he saluted. The German troops smiled, “Viva IL Duce.” The Italian linesman was a familiar figure. He carried a sack filled with fresh-baked bread and pieces of cheese. The Nazis gladly accepted and gave him a pack of cigarettes. In his blue overalls, grey cap, black boots covered with coal dust, and ruddy complexion he looked like a caricature of someone who labored in railyards. He carried a kerosene lantern. Fastened to his belt was an oil can. His job was to change the tracks when trains were approaching so they could enter the underpass directly. Giacomo was the father of four children. He lived in the village next to the main station. Short, stout, and strong, he seemed younger than his 38 years.
