CONTESSA: FODDER FOR THE MASSES

“You are so wonderfully innocent, my dear. We are very much going to enjoy including you in our ceremony later tonight.” I almost tripped as Jolena hauled me to standing and drew me through the crowd back to the main stairs.

I struggled to know where to look. By now people had removed what little clothing they had left. My classmates included. I threw my eyes around the space searching for Kayleigh. Emma was lost in her trance. But Kayleigh and Xavier had edged closer together and were following me and Jolena… at a distance.

But then I lost sight of everyone as Jolena continued to drag me down the stairs to another room. A stone-faced attendant opened the door as we arrived and Jolena pushed me forward. I stumbled into the darkness but found my feet.

This room was overpoweringly scented with musk and more-subtle music played in the background. The group here was smaller. I didn’t have time to take much else in before my captor spoke. “Amand, darling, I want you to meet Tessa, a new student of mine. She shows a lot of promise.” Shivers went down my spine. The way she stressed “promise” made the word sound rude, disgusting… sexual.

Maybe that was because Amand wasn’t wearing any clothes.

None.

Nada.

He was semi reclined on a divan, one foot on the seat, knee bent, a rest for his arm. He looked like a parody of the statue at the temple of Zeus. Thankfully, a piece of fabric lay across the man’s groin.

“Um… I think there has been some sort of mistake?” I couldn’t look at the man. I tried very hard to keep my eyes on his face. But his intense gaze was stripping me and making his intentions blatantly clear. Heat raced to my face and my heart took off at a gallop. I had to get out of there. Quick.

“No mistake, dear. On the contrary. Our Lord asked for you specifically.” Her head indicated the rolling, three-dimensional image that brought the tops of the walls and ceiling to life. “And because of that, I am introducing you to the most influential man in Sardis. Straight to the top for you, Tessa.”

The horrid man on the couch leered and patted the couch next to him.

My eyes flew around the room. Some of my Guard had followed me and each of them were fully engaged with the enemy. Then I almost gagged… again. This whole situation took me straight back to Ashera’s temple in Sodom. With no sense of shame, or decency… or taste, people were practising public… very public, displays of affection… very physical affection. Incense hung heavy in the fetid air. Everything was heavy, dark and dank. My heart took off again and in one part of my brain I had enough clarity to identify I was trying to discern the best tactic. Fight or flight.

I looked to the man in front of me, the woman beside me—once again her hand grasping the back of my neck—and the horror that filled the room.
