In my view, anyone who disguises himself as a compassionate person just to line his own pockets ought to be put in a stockade in the public square. Which is why I must turn the Savage microscope on the tort racket perfected by the bloodsucking trial lawyers.
Did you know that in 2001 the trial lawyers as an “industry” grossed 50 percent more revenue than Microsoft? Did you know these RDDB trial lawyers also successfully sued so many businesses that their combined earnings eclipsed Coca-Cola’s revenues by $22 billion?
You might want to read that one again.
This out-of-control, unregulated industry bilks $200 billion each year from American businesses by goring them with exorbitant judgments.17 From 1975 to 2001, tort system costs totaled more than $2.8 trillion! That doesn’t include the outrageous tobacco settlement, or most “contract and shareholder litigation costs, most punitive damages costs, or any indirect costs such as defensive medicine or reduced innovation or investment.”18 And, when you consider that about 20 percent of these tort costs go directly to the plaintiffs’ attorneys, you begin to see why trial lawyers flock to class action and mass tort suits like maggots on road kill.
THIS OUT-OF-CONTROL, UNREGULATED INDUSTRY BILKS $200 BILLION EACH YEAR FROM AMERICAN BUSINESSES BY GORING THEM WITH EXORBITANT JUDGMENTS.
TRIAL LAWYERS FLOCK TO CLASS ACTION AND MASS TORT SUITS LIKE MAGGOTS ON ROAD KILL.
Here’s how their scam works.
The legal leeches start by stuffing wads of cash into the coffers of politicians to remain unregulated. In Jimmy Hoffa’s day these would be called payoffs. With 86 percent of their political contributions going to Democrat candidates, you can guess where the sympathies of the trial lawyers lie. In 2001–2002 (which are the latest available figures), the Association of Trial Lawyers of America was the Democrats’ leading Political Action Committee donor, surpassing even the labor unions.
Once the politicians are in their back pocket, they use aggressive marketing techniques to acquire new plaintiffs—not because they care about actual harm done to people. No. They just need these sheeple as pawns toward greater profits. They comb the Internet and flood their target markets with newspaper, TV, radio, and billboard ads, ever in search of fresh meat for their predatory litigation. That’s why metro-buses are wallpapered with those placards: “Injured on the job? Call for our FREE class-action evaluation. You pay nothing until we win your case!”
Armed with a new batch of real or imagined victims, they target specific deep-pocketed industries (tobacco, beef, asbestos, doctors, insurers, and pharmaceuticals). Then, in order to look as innocent as your grandmother in a Sunday dress, they employ creative PR campaigns and align themselves with consumer “advocacy groups” so you think they’re on the side of the victims against the “ruthless doctors,” “big business,” or the “greedy” drug companies.
Take, for example, the avalanche of asbestos-related lawsuits—a favorite trial lawyer cash cow that squeezed $54 billion from corporations to date. This is the longest-running mass tort scam in our history. To date, sixty-seven companies have been forced into bankruptcy, including Owens Corning Fiberglass, Bethlehem Steel, Pittsburgh Corning, USG Corporation, Johns-Manville, and W.
