CHAPTER 13

Ms. Shin spoke into her floating microphone. “Ready or not, we will begin.” She walked around to each team and stuck a sticker on their table. When she got to a team of older kids, she inspected the vase and frowned. “Disqualified for moving vase closer.” It was so obvious that they had, because the grass was indented where the vase had originally been placed. The kids shrugged, and she motioned for them to leave the area and join the ungrouped kids watching on the sidelines.

“Can’t believe they would make a mistake like that,” Eugene said.

“Strange that they did,” I said. “They knew better.”

Chloe squinted. “Isn’t that the group you were going to be with, Joon?”

Joon turned red and said, “Yeah, I guess Rae took my place.”

We were the last station to be checked. Ms. Shin examined the arrows and vase and gave us a sticker. I could’ve sworn I saw her smile a little. Maybe that meant we were on the right track.

“All right, remember the rules,” Ms. Shin instructed. “Everything else is fair game. Except, of course, don’t kill each other.”

Of course we would never hurt—much less kill—each other. Before I had time to think much about what she’d said, a shrill bell rang.

“You have twelve minutes,” she said. “May the best team win.”

I grabbed a splattered arrow and drew my arm back.

“Wait,” Chloe shouted, and held my arm. “You have to tell me which vessel you’re aiming at so I can command the chips.”

That totally made sense. Whew. I’d almost cost our team a big one. “Extra small, right side.”

Chloe squeezed her eyes shut and put her fingers on the sides of her head. “Done.”

“Here goes,” I said. The arrow soared into the air, zigzagged all over the place, and then swooped down straight into the extra-small vessel on the right.

“Yes!” Joon shouted. We all jumped around and hugged each other.

Eugene grabbed the other splattered arrow and said, “Extra small, left side.”

Chloe nodded and said, “Go.”

I clenched my fists and watched his arrow swoop up into the air, deep-dive down, and spiral its way into the second extra-small vessel.

We gave Eugene high fives. This was going to be an easy win. I looked around and saw a few groups struggling and others pointing in our direction.

“Eight minutes left,” Ms. Shin said.

“Okay,” I shouted. “Let’s hustle, team.”

We took turns with the arrows and shot them all successfully into the vessels. With three minutes left we were down to two striped arrows, and the extra-small and small vessels were completely full.

There was a shattering sound, and the vessels at the station near us started to burst one by one.

A girl shouted, “Stop it!” to Victor, who was chanting with his eyes laser-focused on the vase.

He smirked and shrugged. “Oops!”

“Tell him to stop!” the girl pleaded to Ms. Shin.

Ms. Shin shook her head. “It’s allowed.”

Victor’s eyes met mine, and I looked away quickly. He was on the team right next to us, so we had to finish before Victor had a chance to destroy our vessels.
