Chapter Twenty-Three
Chicken Dinner Road
Marnie Starr. The girl with the neon green backpack lived on Chicken Dinner Road. Ford didnât believe it until they turned left onto it from Highway 55.
The girl had bloodshot eyes, and a pungent combination of marijuana and cigarettes emanated from her entire being. Ford had wasted enough time with small talk, especially after they had to wait nearly two hours for both of Marnieâs parents to arrive home from work.
âMarnie, why didnât you speak up? Why did you let that Larissa bitch steamroll you?â The girlâs brows knitted together in unison with Sotoâs.
âLetâs take a step back,â Soto interjected. âMarnie, do you have any questions for Special Agent Ford and me before we start?â
âSo youâre with the FBI, or you both are with the FBI?â She wagged a finger between the two women.
âSpecial Agent Ford is with the FBI, Paranormal Investigations.â
âRad. So like the X-Flies?â
âExactly.â
âAnd you?â She wagged her finger toward Soto.
âAnd Iâm with Washington State Fish and Wildlife.â
âWashington like DC?â
âNo, like Seattle. Like Nirvana, coffee, and rain.â
âOh, my God. Isnât weed, like, totally legal there?â
Soto laughed at her comment. âYes, it is.â
âThatâs lit.â
Fordâs ears perked at her choice of words.
âYouâre so lucky,â Marnie gushed.
âSheâs totes lucky,â Ford replied and shrugged her shoulders at her own word choice and the corresponding teasing look Soto gave her.
Marnieâs attention went to Lexy. âWhat about her?â
âYou can pet her.â Soto unclipped Lexyâs leash to the girlâs delight. âThis is Lexy. Sheâs my partner.â
The dog wagged her tail furiously and bobbed her head up and down. She rolled on the ground clearly enjoying the free tummy scratches.
âSheâs so cute! Do you think she knows sheâs cute?â Marnie patted the dogâs head.
âShe knows.â Soto folded Lexyâs leash in her hands.
âI wish I had a dog.â The girl was sitting on the floor practically wrestling with Lexy. She asked Soto numerous dog-related questions that spanned grooming, dog clothes, and toys.
âLook,â Ford said. She was close to the end of her rope. âWe need to get going here. The sooner you can help us, the sooner you can go back to smoking weed and getting on with your life, got it? Maybe after this your dad can get you a puppy, huh?â Her comment got her Sotoâs elbow to her ribs and dangerously close to her injury. She winced and gave Soto a stern look and rubbed her side. Soto mouthed âsorry,â while trying to hold in her amusement.
Ford leaned toward the girl. âMarnie, I am deeply sorry you have to relive the horrible experience. Weâre sorry weâre here talking to you because that Larissa bitch got in the middle of everything.â The girl flipped a package of rolling papers from hand to hand, seemingly uninterested in what Ford had to say. âBelieve it or not,â Ford continued, âyou are one of only a handful of eyewitnesses. Despite what you might think, you are extremely important to us and to this case.â
âI am?â
âImportant as fuck, and I promise you, after itâs said and done, you will feel loads better.
