Chapter Twenty-Three

Chicken Dinner Road

Marnie Starr. The girl with the neon green backpack lived on Chicken Dinner Road. Ford didn’t believe it until they turned left onto it from Highway 55.

The girl had bloodshot eyes, and a pungent combination of marijuana and cigarettes emanated from her entire being. Ford had wasted enough time with small talk, especially after they had to wait nearly two hours for both of Marnie’s parents to arrive home from work.

“Marnie, why didn’t you speak up? Why did you let that Larissa bitch steamroll you?” The girl’s brows knitted together in unison with Soto’s.

“Let’s take a step back,” Soto interjected. “Marnie, do you have any questions for Special Agent Ford and me before we start?”

“So you’re with the FBI, or you both are with the FBI?” She wagged a finger between the two women.

“Special Agent Ford is with the FBI, Paranormal Investigations.”

“Rad. So like the X-Flies?”

“Exactly.”

“And you?” She wagged her finger toward Soto.

“And I’m with Washington State Fish and Wildlife.”

“Washington like DC?”

“No, like Seattle. Like Nirvana, coffee, and rain.”

“Oh, my God. Isn’t weed, like, totally legal there?”

Soto laughed at her comment. “Yes, it is.”

“That’s lit.”

Ford’s ears perked at her choice of words.

“You’re so lucky,” Marnie gushed.

“She’s totes lucky,” Ford replied and shrugged her shoulders at her own word choice and the corresponding teasing look Soto gave her.

Marnie’s attention went to Lexy. “What about her?”

“You can pet her.” Soto unclipped Lexy’s leash to the girl’s delight. “This is Lexy. She’s my partner.”

The dog wagged her tail furiously and bobbed her head up and down. She rolled on the ground clearly enjoying the free tummy scratches.

“She’s so cute! Do you think she knows she’s cute?” Marnie patted the dog’s head.

“She knows.” Soto folded Lexy’s leash in her hands.

“I wish I had a dog.” The girl was sitting on the floor practically wrestling with Lexy. She asked Soto numerous dog-related questions that spanned grooming, dog clothes, and toys.

“Look,” Ford said. She was close to the end of her rope. “We need to get going here. The sooner you can help us, the sooner you can go back to smoking weed and getting on with your life, got it? Maybe after this your dad can get you a puppy, huh?” Her comment got her Soto’s elbow to her ribs and dangerously close to her injury. She winced and gave Soto a stern look and rubbed her side. Soto mouthed “sorry,” while trying to hold in her amusement.

Ford leaned toward the girl. “Marnie, I am deeply sorry you have to relive the horrible experience. We’re sorry we’re here talking to you because that Larissa bitch got in the middle of everything.” The girl flipped a package of rolling papers from hand to hand, seemingly uninterested in what Ford had to say. “Believe it or not,” Ford continued, “you are one of only a handful of eyewitnesses. Despite what you might think, you are extremely important to us and to this case.”

“I am?”

“Important as fuck, and I promise you, after it’s said and done, you will feel loads better.
