CHAPTER FOURTEEN
When Deke went into the bathroom and closed the door, Cece collapsed in a heap on the couch, careful not to land on any of the pointy parts of the trident. Deke was just so incredibly handsome andâ¦justâ¦nice. She liked him more and more every moment she was around him, and she hadnât forgotten the delicious taste of his kiss and the way he had made her feel all tingly inside.
Shivers went down her spine at the thought of his arms around her, his strong body against hers. He might claim to not be magical, but the way she felt when she was near him set her senses spinning in a way sheâd never before experienced. He was magic. Maybe not the type he was used to, but to her, he was definitely something special.
Today had been very hectic. Being attacked on her own land had left her shaken to her very core. Deke had been there, which had made it somehow better, though it was still awful to consider that her home wasnât as safe as she had always believed. The trees had protected her as best they could, but only within the cathedral had she truly been safe. If sheâd been alone, she couldnât have hidden out there forever. Eventually, she would have had to go outside that protected grove, and then, she wouldâve been toast. Captured or killed or whatever those people had had in mind for her. It didnât bear thinking about.
Deke, however, had been able to call for reinforcements. Heâd known more about her nearest neighbors than she had. Living in ignorance, believing she was safe as long she was on her mountain, had been foolish. Stupid, even. Why had she never questioned the people around her more closely? Why had she never sought allies for mutual protection?
She wouldnât make that mistake again. When she got back home, things were going to change. She was going to restore her close friendship with the Wulfs and form some tactical alliances with the people around her who had been so incredibly helpful when sheâd come under attack. There had to be something she could do for them to thank them for what theyâd done for her. She owed them, big time. But not only that.
Cece realized now that her isolation wasnât really a way to stay safe, as sheâd always thought. It was dangerous to be up there on that mountaintop all alone with nobody to call on if she needed help. Sure, she was usually well able to take care of her own needs, but the attack had proven to her that sometimes everybody needed a helping hand.
Deke came out of the bathroom much quicker than sheâd expected. His hair was damp, and he wasnât wearing a shirt, just a pair of what could be either baggy swim trunks or some kind of surfer shorts. They had cargo pockets, which most of his gear seemed to have. She wondered for a brief moment what heâd
