Chapter
Twenty
It was three days later when things started to go wrong. I had managed to keep my little excursion a secret from Cent but between seeing the mystery Orb and the horrible hulking machines in that cave, I was more determined than ever to get him out of here. Dad, on the other hand, was more determined than ever to keep me a secret. He couldnât figure out why, but the Brokers were on the warpath; they had shut down all trade and were pulling in favors left right and center in order to âinterviewâ people in private. Something was going down, he said, and he didnât want me caught in the middle of it. If only he knewâ¦
He was at work one day and I was settled in for the exciting conclusion of International Trade Law, when there was a knock at the door. I remained silent, and even briefly entertained the idea of crawling under Centâs problem-solving blanket.
âPssst,â said a voice through the door. âHey, newbie? Itâs me, Exie. Open up!â
Canary looked at me reproachfully as I walked towards the door.
âCome on,â Exie urgently said. âI know youâre in there.â
âI canât open the door,â I lied, feeling the broken drill bit in my overall pocket.
âOh yeah? You just walk through it last time, huh?â she said playfully. âCome on. I had fun last time, letâs go on another adventure?â
I was already smiling at the thought.
âOk, ok!â I whispered through the door. âHang on a sec.â
People are often fond, I have noticed, of boiling huge, seminal events down to one small, seemingly insignificant action. Perhaps it helps people cope with or understand life, or maybe some folks just like to remind themselves just how much power they have over things, either way I would like to do that now. Pushing the broken drill bit into that little locking mechanism was probably one of the worst mistakes Iâve ever made in my life. And thatâs saying something.
The moment the door slid open enough, it wasnât Exieâs smiling face that poked through, it was a vicious looking, sharpened pneumatic drill. I jumped back and the door closed on it, but it was too late. Whoever owned the drill forced another one in under it and with a roar began pushing the metal door open. The mechanism squealed in protest for a bit then seemed to give up as, with a wrenching sound, the door opened.
Standing before me was Quatro, every bit as brutal as before and not looking nearly as short against me as he did when standing in the arena. Behind him, eclipsing the light from the hall was Tim, his vicious saw and charred flamer were hanging causally by his side, but they were no less terror-inducing for his relaxed pose. They entered like lions into a cave, ignoring me as they scanned the room to make sure I was alone.
I wasnât paralyzed with fear so much as rendered automatic by it. I took three steps back and sat down hard on the chair behind me.
