Promote professional development

This unit is worth 4 credits.

People receiving care services must be confident that they can trust those who deliver care to not only know what to do but to know how to do it well. This requires you to continually update and extend your knowledge and skills and, as a manager, to ensure that your team is also equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills in order to fulfil their roles effectively. Personal professional development is a journey for the whole of your life; it does not end with the completion of a course or a specific activity but should, ideally, be an ‘activity of daily living’. The secret of successful personal development is to learn to be reflective and questioning, both about the things we know and the things we do not know.

This unit will help you to examine and assess your understanding of professional development, professionalism and the responsibilities that these concepts entail as a manager and leader. You will develop your reflective and individual planning skills in order to help you to determine how you can most effectively support your own development and that of others, and you will evaluate strategies to overcome barriers.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this unit you will:
