Chapter Seven

“You sure you’re ready to get back to work?” I asked as Seth was getting dressed.

The day after Sterling’s party, he’d received a call from the district attorney asking if he’d like to be put on a new case. Of course Seth hadn’t hesitated to say yes. I knew he was sick of hanging around the house and running mindless errands. I just wasn’t sure I was ready for him to get back out there. I was concerned for his safety, and even though he was healing, he still had some pain throughout the day.

“I need something to do, Ava. I can’t sit around the house. Nor can I continue to dig up my past. All I do is look through box after box and flip through pages of Richard’s journal. It’s draining me, and I’m ready to get back to work. People need me, Ava. I’m surprised it took the DA that long to call me, to be honest. I had been hoping for that phone call a week ago,” he said.

“I know it hasn’t been easy. I just worry about you.”

“I worry about you, but do you ever listen to me?” he teased.

“I listen. I just don’t follow all the time.”

“I’ll be fine, Ava. Sterling will be with me, actually. His chief is assigning him as my security per se.”

“Oh, well, that should be fun. How much work will you actually be doing?”

“Why do you want me to stay home anyway? You’re going to work. It’s only fair for you to let me get back to it as well.” He lifted his mouth into a sly smile. “Besides, it’s not like I’ll be doing anything exciting like hanging out with Mrs. Dearborn.”

“Ugh,” I groaned. He really knew how to put a damper on things. “Maybe I can call in sick. I feel a cold coming on. Cough, cough,” I teased. “We could spend the day in bed.”

“You little vixen, you. We can’t spend the day in bed. I have lives to save and you have old ladies to listen to. Maybe I can stop by for lunch. What time does she usually show up?”

“Shut up. You’re never allowed back to my shop.” I picked up a pillow and threw it at him.

He caught it and rushed toward me. I was still sitting on the edge of the bed, and when he reached me, he gently pushed me back, crawling on top of me.

“We could give her a little show,” he said softly, bringing his face inches from mine. “She’d love that.”

“You’re not funny.”

“But you still love me.” He kissed me before I could respond.

My eyes closed and I lost myself for a brief moment. When he pulled away and stood up, I sighed.

“That I do. Very much so, in fact.”

“Then don’t look so sad, love. It’s not like I’m leaving forever.”

“Go kick some bad-guy ass today, baby.”

“There’s my girl,” he said, kissing me again. “Johnson will be following you today. He got into a little trouble at the station last week.
