Riding the Polo Pony
Polo Ponies are the heart of the sport and will carry you to your greatest victories and hardest defeats. They will be with you in the battle every step of the way and if they trust you they will give you their heart and soul to help you be your best. No matter how good you are as a player, you can never outdo the value the horse will bring to your game in a positive or negative way. For this reason you will do yourself a favor to try and be the best horseman and rider you can be, in your search to be a better polo player.
Why is it so important to know how to ride for polo? Learning to ride properly for polo is what will give you your best shot at being safe in the sport of polo. Learning to ride well for polo is also what will give you your best chance of getting the most out of a horse that it has to offer. Consider this fact. How well could you do if you were placed in the driver’s seat of a massive submarine with little sea or boating experience? How much do you think you could know about its capabilities in just seven minutes and would you be able to max out its capabilities submerging, floating and ascending? Or try this example. What would happen if you were thrown in a high level race car and had just seven minutes to figure out all of its gears, special features, speed capacity, safety options etc .
before your race started? How much of the racecar’s full potential do you think you could get out of that car when the race started? Well, this is why it is so important to spend time off of the field to learn all you can about riding your horse properly. Not only is a horse complex, it has a brain, emotions and a heart that can all translate into a bonus jackpot of help or a complete ass and saddle fight if provoked in the wrong direction. So do your homework and start spending some time on the track practicing or taking a few extra lessons if there is a polo or riding coach close by who inspires you.
For those of you new players wanting some help in the riding for polo department, here are a few riding drills to try away from the game to help you log some hours towards having stronger riding capabilities when you play. Remember this, the more time you spend riding the more confidence you will be able to attain.
Strengthen sport specific riding muscles by taking a set: A helpful pre-season riding drill can be to go take a set with your groom or a friend who has polo ponies. This exercise will help you start building your riding muscles and help you learn to pay attention to your surroundings and more than just you. This will broaden your ability to be confident in company as well.
