“You can’t keep her hidden forever, Lord Keil.” Grafen, his chief aide looked down at the schedule he’d been reviewing with Keil. “You are expected to attend the reception this evening.” He paused. “With your new wife.”

Keil frowned. He’d never thought much about the sexual customs of his people. He’d certainly never considered how a husband felt when he’d considered one of their wives as a possible lover. His lady’s people prized fidelity, so he wasn’t really worried about her taking a lover now. He just didn’t like the idea of every man on the ship thinking she was available and bothering her. He’d noticed her discomfort when he’d escorted her back from the school. With her fair skin, discomfort became a beacon.

“Your people are most curious to meet your lady—” He looked up and tugged at the neck of his uniform when his gaze collided with Keil’s. “Your presence is necessary, my lord.”

“We will both be in attendance, Grafen. Since my lady is not Emperian, I’m sure I can count on my staff to both respect her cultural differences and protect her from unwanted attention?” He lifted a brow. “You are aware of her cultural differences, Grafen?”

“Of course, my lord.”

He wasn’t, but he would be by the time the reception began.

“Make sure the rest of my staff is aware as well. My lady’s father will be in attendance. He is my counterpart among her people. We will give him no cause to complain of a lack of respect towards his daughter.”

“No, my lord.”

Keil hid a smile as he bent to business. Grafen hid his disappointment well. There was, Keil knew, a certain cachet attached to taking a superior’s wife as a lover. Grafen would have been first in line with the charm offensive. Now he would have to be defender of the castle.

When he left, Keil leaned back, thinking about his lady. It had been a good week. He’d not expected to enjoy marriage this much. His parents certainly didn’t. By the end of the first week, they both looked elsewhere and only looked back when it was time to have him.

Instead of waning, his interest in his lady seemed stronger each day. He thought about her often during the day, missed her when they were apart, felt impatient when anything delayed his return to their quarters. He already felt frustrated that they’d have to go out this evening.

He looked at the screen. None of this was urgent. What felt urgent was seeing his lady. Now.

He shut down his access, secured it and headed for the door. In the corridor, he ran into Beltan, the systems manager.

“You are heading to your quarters, my Lord?”

Keil nodded, hiding his frustration behind a diplomatic mask. “Is there a problem?”

“There’s some kind of system anomaly that I traced back to your quarters. I should have been able to remote access, but I can’t.”

Keil wasn’t surprised the man couldn’t access his quarters. He was not an expert with systems, but his lady seemed to be.
