CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MALMO, SWEDEN

Present Day

Caine exited the Øresund Bridge and vanished into the shadows just before the Swedish police arrived. He turned the bike down a narrow alley, avoiding the main roads. He’d escaped arrest, but he had lost the thief and the briefcase. Before he could resume pursuit, he required a less conspicuous vehicle. The stolen Danish police motorcycle would certainly stand out in Sweden.

He rumbled along the backstreets until he discovered a Honda Fireblade motorcycle parked outside a modern apartment block. Caine waited in the shadows. He turned the police bike's headlamp off but kept the engine idling.

Sure enough, a few minutes later, the parking garage gate rattled open, moving along a motorized track. A man exited the garage, driving a dark-gray sedan, and drove off into the night. Caine revved the throttle and sped inside the garage just as the gate closed behind him.

Once inside, he maneuvered into the darkest part of the garage he could find and killed the engine. He waited a few minutes, but no one else entered the dark, cavernous structure. Caine dismounted, wiped down the bike to eliminate prints, then approached a battered white pickup truck parked nearby. Searching the open rear bed, he found a large, rusted toolbox beneath a tarp near the wheel well. He rummaged around inside, grabbed a small screwdriver, then darted down a dim alley behind the truck. Within seconds, he was back on the streets.

As he walked, Caine removed the policeman’s Glock from his waistband and checked the magazine. To his surprise, the weapon was loaded with rubber bullets, nonlethal rounds used for crowd control.

Caine tucked the weapon into his belt, keeping his SIG Sauer nestled against his spine. Then he pulled his cell phone from his front pocket and called Yan.

“For months, I don’t hear a word from you,” she said, answering without even saying hello. “Now, you won’t stop calling.”

“People will start to talk,” Caine said with a grin. He heard other voices chattering in the background, speaking Chinese. It sounded like Yan was busy.

“Please,” she snapped. “I have a lot on my plate here. Let’s not waste time.”

“I have a problem,” Caine responded.

“Why am I not surprised? And why aren’t you calling your operations officer?”

Fletcher, Caine thought. Yan had a point. That was standard protocol.

“Let’s just say after our last conversation, I’m not sure how reliable Emily Fletcher’s intel is. Or her judgement.”

“I’m not sure you’re one to talk,” Yan snapped.

“There was an incident on the Øresund Bridge,” he continued, ignoring her jibe.

“Yes, I saw. It’s all over the news. The Danish police don’t have any clear footage of your face. But you’ll be lucky to escape the Nordic countries without being arrested.”

“That’s not why I called.”

“Let me guess,” the woman continued. “You want to know where the Chinese operative is. The man on the motorcycle who took the briefcase.”

“Yeah. How did you know?”

“I’m watching you on the NRO channel,” Jezebel Yan said, referring to the National Reconnaissance Office who ran America’s network of spy satellites.
