I stared at the gun, probably more stunned by the sudden turn of events than I should have been. I mean, I was raised in the south. Men carried guns on their hips at the Wal-Mart, and you could be damn certain they protected their homes with only the finest in blow-your-face-off artillery.

But I’d somehow got it into my head that whoever lived in this house wouldn’t be dangerous. The lake was so beautiful, and in my dreams, it had been nothing but peaceful. Surely anything else in this valley would be the same?

I suddenly realized I was very much in the middle of nowhere, and nobody knew my whereabouts. If this gun exploded, and I got tossed in the lake, I’d never be found.

Before I could figure out my next move, the gun lowered, and a weathered brown face appeared in the darkness behind it. An elderly man, with deep folds around his rheumy eyes, sparse gray hair, and stains on his white t-shirt.

“Oh, it’s you,” he said in a surprisingly clear, but gruff, voice. “You’re here. Finally.”

His statement made me flash back to the moment the lake had seemed to hug me and the voice in my head had said the same thing. Finally.

I was about done with the damn theatrics. My life felt like one disaster right after another, with all this supernatural mumbo jumbo and people keeping half-truths. Could I just get some answers for once?

“Yes!” I snapped, maybe a little too harshly. “I’m finally here. Now can you by any chance tell me what the fuck I’m doing here?”

The old man didn’t even flinch in the face of my fury. He stepped back, his bare feet silent on the wooden floor, and tugged the door open. “Well, come in.”

He left the door standing wide and shuffled off towards the inner gloom of the cabin. Facing no other option but to follow, I stepped into his house and closed the door behind me.

Without the open door, the interior dimmed dramatically. A small hallway bisected the cabin ahead of me, the walls slat wood instead of drywall, and the floors made of the same crude planks.

I followed the man’s disappearing shoulders down the hall, peeking into open doorways to find a cozy living room, a small but serviceable bathroom, and two empty bedrooms with perfectly made beds. The hallway ended at a large kitchen at the back of the house.

The old man opened an ancient green refrigerator whose motor rumbled feebly, and he extracted two cans from the bottom shelf. He held them up for me to see—Natty Light. “Beer?”

After the morning I’d had, a beer sounded refreshing. Even a shitty one like Natty Light. “Great. Thanks.”

He crossed to the crude wooden table that dominated the center of the room and set a can in front of an empty chair, then he carried his own beer around to the other side to sit opposite me.

I appreciated his giving me space, because right now, I wasn’t too sure whether this man was friend or foe.
