CHAPTER 25

Aviva

I was exhausted by the time I finally got to top the tree with a shiny tin star. Gramps was right: The crooked branch on top did make the star tilt at a precarious angle, but as I stood back and took it all in, I was in love with this Christmas tree. It was probably the best ever! At least, the best ever first time decoration attempt by a Jewish girl who had literally no idea what she was doing.

Charlie put her arm around me, surprising me at first. But it felt good and like what my own mom would do, so I leaned into it. I am a natural hugger, after all.

“I’d say it’s the best tree we’ve ever had,” said Gramps.

See?

“I can’t disagree,” said Charlie. “But now it’s time for bed.” She kissed the top of my head, and I squirmed happily. My mom always did that, too. “Go brush your teeth, and I’ll come tuck you in.”

“Yes, ma’am!” I said, saluting her.

Charlie chuckled. “You’re in a funny mood today, Holly.”

“She’s been like that since we left the center,” said Gramps. “Must be the influence of all those pageant kids bringing you out of your shell.”

“Maybe!” I said, but this felt like dangerous territory, so I turned away from them both.

But as soon as I set foot into the hallway, I hesitated. I rushed back to Holly’s grandpa and threw my arms around him. “G’night, Gramps!” I said, kissing him on the cheek.

Then I hightailed it off to the bathroom before I could find out if that was un-Holly or not.

It took me a while to do things that are normally second nature, like brushing my teeth and flossing and washing my face, because nothing was where it was supposed to be. The washcloths were in a drawer, not under the sink. The toothbrush was in a medicine cabinet, not a cup on the counter. And where were the fun giraffe-shaped flossers that I used at home? (Nowhere. Holly just used regular string floss. Boring.)

Finally I finished up and made my way to Holly’s bedroom. I pulled back the covers and slipped in between the sheets, and … Were these flannel, too? I laughed out loud at my warmth-obsessed sister but snuggled in deeper. The bed was extra cozy, like it was giving me a hug. Which was welcome after the mind-warp of a day I’d had.

Holly’s mom came in a second later to say good night. She tucked the covers around me and gave me another kiss on my forehead. I wiggled my toes happily under the blankets. “Get a good night’s rest,” she said, as she flipped off the light. “We’re going to have a fun day tomorrow.”

“Okay. Good night,” I said.

Only after she’d closed the door did I wonder, Wait. What’s happening tomorrow? Holly had mentioned getting the tree today, but nothing about tomorrow. Didn’t her mom have to work?

Whatever. Time would tell soon enough.

I sighed contentedly and nestled into the blankets. I’d
