Don’t chuck people because they’re wearing the wrong shoes
OK, so you’re out on a date with a guy and he seems nice, you’ve had a really good evening, but you think his shoes are hideous, or the pattern on his shirt is so offensive that it makes you angry, or he’s wearing a shark-tooth necklace and it makes you want to vomit.
These are all minutiae! They are not his personality.
He probably just wasn’t sure what to wear and thought, ‘This might look nice.’ I mean, some guys couldn’t give a hoot what they wear and just try to make a bit of an effort for you. Maybe they’ve never worn the shoes before but they thought, ‘I’ll crack these ones out, they’re clean.’
To judge somebody on their outside is very easy to do and, OMG, I used to do it. But it’s a sad thing to do, because often you’re going to miss out on some really, really wonderful people. Let me tell you my own experience.
I’d been with Matthew for a week (snogging for a week; we’d been walking for nine weeks). I really liked him. He was a very nice guy, very grounded, very kind, thoughtful, funny and seemed to have an amazing family. I mean, he was ticking all the boxes, and so I invited him to my thirty-first birthday party. I hadn’t quite taken into account how terrifying that would be for him. He had only just found out that I was quite famous and he was about to meet everybody I’d ever known, including my family, all at once.
Anyway, it was a free bar and he got really drunk because he was so nervous. I immediately thought, ‘Oh no, he’s an alcoholic! I knew there had to be something wrong with him.’ During that party he did some of the most extraordinary dancing I’ve ever seen in my entire life, in the middle of the dance floor, sticking his tongue out, pointing fingers. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know if I can be with you.’ I was really embarrassed (which says more about me at that time than it does about him, but I didn’t know that then) and between the alcohol and the dancing, I decided to call it all off.
I met him the next morning in a café and he made me laugh so much that I thought, ‘Oh sod it, he’s hysterical. I love him. I don’t mind about the dancing.’ I did mention the alcohol.
‘I’ve got to be quite careful because it’s important to me that I’m not with somebody who’s an alcoholic,’ I said.
‘Are you mad? I’m not an alcoholic!’
The upshot of this story is that his dancing is now one of my most favourite things about him. I love the fact that he totally releases when he gets a bit tipsy on the dance floor and goes absolutely mad. In fact, I actively encourage it because it’s so great. He’s so free and I admire that.
