more unlikely sentence I’ve never heard. Then he started telling me

about an incident that happened off the coast of Maine involving a

Coast Guard cutter and a yacht that had been out to sea for several

months. The man on board had been eating fish and filtering his

water, hoping to outlast the epidemic.

“Not to be melodramatic,” Bill started to say. We both stared at

each other and burst out into laughter. Perhaps the laughter verged

on being hysterical on my part. If there ever was a proper time to be

melodramatic, we were living in it.
