Harold sits at the head of the conference room table, the rest of the company taking up the sides evenly. Carmen puts croissants and donuts in the center of the table. “Does anyone need more coffee?”

Roger smiles at her. “Thanks Carmen, we’ll get it if we need it.”

“I want a latte. Whipped cream on the top.” It seems like Harold just wants to make her life difficult. There is no reason he can’t have regular coffee with everyone else. He’d already had 3 cups, loaded with sugar and cream.

“Of course, Mr. Carson.” Carmen eases herself out of the conference room and closes the door softly . She goes back to her desk to get money. Her money. Harold never reimbursed her for all the coffees and sandwiches he had her pick up. It is almost as though he wanted her to spend all her money on him. She just doesn’t know how to ask for it back, so she doesn’t.

“Where you headed?” Bonnie walks up to Carmen’s desk and smiles with those perfect lips. Carmen swallows hard and with shaking hands, picks up her wallet.

“I’m going to get a latte for Mr. Carson. I mean your dad.”

“I want an espresso. How about I walk over there with you? If you’d like the company.” Bonnie winks at Carmen. Did she? Carmen isn’t sure but she plays it off like nothing happened.

“Okay, sure.” Carmen gets up and waits for Bonnie to get out of her way. But Bonnie doesn’t. She makes sure that Carmen has to brush up against her before she moves back. “Excuse me.”

“No problem” But Carmen felt something and she knew Bonnie had planned it that way. Why would Bonnie be doing this to her? She decided to put it behind her and ignore it. A good distance apart together they walk out of Bridgeport Marketing, into the sunshine. Alone again. Carmen’s skin tingles.

“So, where did you go to school?”

“Portsmouth High.” Carmen bites her lower lip. “I never went to college or anything. Not like you. Wow, grad school. That’s amazing.”

“Not really. They just want tuition. Almost anyone can get in.”

“From what you father says, you got straight A’s. That’s not just anyone.”

“Ha, whatever.” Bonnie smiles at her, perfect teeth showing. “You seem like you probably got straight A’s, too. You’re very much the studious type.”

“I did, but…” Carmen doesn’t want to say that she couldn’t afford college, even though she really wanted to go. Even community college would have been fine with her, but there wasn’t even money for that. “You know, I wanted to get into the work force as soon as possible.”

Bonnie doesn’t say anything, she doesn’t want to embarrass Carmen, but she realizes that Carmen couldn’t afford it, and suddenly feels guilty. “Yeah, I’ve had an easy road, I guess.”

“Don’t’ say that, straight A’s are hard to come by. Don’t put yourself down.” Carmen is surprised she’s able to have that tone with Bonnie, I mean, this is the boss’ daughter, Carmen quickly retracts. “I mean…”

“I know what you mean and you’re right.
