They spent the day in the biohazard lab, a privilege that boggled Brenna. She’d been out in the forests, wearing sneakers caked in mud, ‘visiting friends,’ and all the while checking for disease, asking for blood samples and more. She should be in quarantine. But there were so few scientists and doctors who had lived in the outbreak tents and had her firsthand experience that CDC that they decided to test her regularly.

“Give me your arm.” Dalena grinned at her. “Stop grumbling, Brenna.”

Dalena’s hands were soft, but the needle never was. She’d had her own blood drawn so many times she wondered why it would be an issue, but it was. As if she would tell people it was the Landa Landa and refuse treatment. No, she’d yell Ebola from a rooftop and swallow every medication anyone would give her.

“Why aren’t we drawing on you, Dee?”

Dalena looked at her askance. “I wasn’t in the care tents.”

The frown on her face must have perfectly mirrored the other woman’s. Their faces could not have looked more different. But they mirrored each other’s expressions and emotions so cleanly. “Do you not want to work in the tents anymore?”

“No. That’s not it. I just felt I was needed in the lab.”

“Let me know, Dee.” Her mother had always said, ‘work hard, vacation harder.’ “We haven’t had a break in a while. Let’s take a vacation after this?”

“Brenna, you are preaching to the choir. But we have to catch a break here before we can take one for ourselves.” Something passed across her face—some kind of concern?—Brenna couldn’t place it.

Something was off with Dalena.

But the woman knew her science. “Let’s hit the lab. We have strains to analyze.”

Letting the tape hold the stupid cotton ball in place, Brenna pulled her sleeve down over it. She looked like she had a tumor in the crook of her elbow, but it was hardly the greatest of her concerns. Her best friend was acting weird and, oh yeah, one of the deadliest diseases known to man had hit major cities in a world super power.

It took twenty minutes to get into the sab suits properly—a revelation in Brenna’s mind. It took twenty minutes in Sierra Leone, too, but that was because duct tape was hard to find, and there was always a patch to make to the plastic sheeting or the suit. The circulating air felt like the artic to her.

Much later in the day they held results from a variety of tests. The first job had been identifying the strain. Brenna grew more and more worried as she watched the results come in, but now the truth was unavoidable.

Turning to the other woman, an awkward gesture at best in the puffy suit, she simply let her expression do the talking.

“I know, Brenna. It’s almost eerie.” Dalena replied.

Thirty minutes and six decontamination helpers later, Brenna walked quietly down the long hallway, finally stopping at Jordan and Jillian’s office. Dalena almost bumped into her back.

“Nice office.” She spoke rather than knocking.
