CHAPTER 9
A sense of integrity fills the air the second I walk into the prosecutor’s office.
I always feel it here.
“It’s nice to see you, Dean.” Kellie Montana smiles at me as I sit down opposite her. Her office is well-lit and well-stocked. Law books fill every possible gap in the walls, and the modern furniture gives her office a very slick feel. Her dark colored desk is large and perfectly organized, with not a pen out of place. It is taking all my strength not to nudge one of the pens out of their perfect formation.
After the prosecution had responded to my further discovery requests, l decided we needed a discussion about how to move the case forward.
“You look lovely.” I smile as I sit down opposite Kellie Montana.
In reality, she looks amazing. Stunning. Beautiful. Her blonde hair hangs gently on her shoulders, her blue eyes are smoldering, and her physique looks delicious.
But looks are only part of the Kellie Montana package.
She is also ferocious, intelligent, and quick-witted. Just the way I like my women.
“How have you been?” she asks.
“I am a lot better for seeing your beautiful smile.”
“Are you flirting with me, Dean?” She grins and leans forward.
I smile. “It’s hard not to flirt with you, Kellie.”
She squirms a little, pushes her hair back over her ear, and tries to act distracted with the file in front of her.
“I see that you have taken on the Mitchell Clayton case?” She changes the subject.
“I have. That’s what I am here to talk about.”
“It sure is an interesting one, Dean. I have taken a look at the Himalayan Winter Poppy, and all the evidence says that it is useless. It does nothing, and he is charging ridiculous amounts for it. He has made a lot of money from something that doesn’t work.”
“That doesn’t mean that he is guilty of murder.”
“No, but it clearly gives him a motive to kill the greatest threat to his business, Dr. Winslow. Science doesn’t seem to sit well with this plant.”
“You wouldn’t know the half of it.” I smile.
“Maybe.” She shrugs. “But fraud also doesn’t look good for Mitchell’s character reference.”
Of course. That is the way the prosecution is going to play this. They are going to attack Mitchell’s creditability and then let the evidence finish. How a defendant is presented to the jury is very important. If he looks dodgy, then the jury may even make their judgments in the first few moments.
“I’m disappointed, Kellie,” I say. “I would have thought that you were above playing that card. That is a cheap shot on an innocent man.”
“I’ll play any legal card that will put a murderer away.”
That’s the thing that irks me about prosecutions. They never doubt the evidence. They believe everything that is presented to them. Kellie didn’t refer to “winning the case” or “proving the case.” She has already given Mitchell the title of murderer.
“I don’t think I need to remind that you that Mitchell is innocent until proven guilty. He is not a ‘murderer,’ either legally, or morally,” I say, defending my client.
