Communists, anarchists, and libertarian socialists, while differing greatly in their analysis and approach, all saw the accumulation of wealth in a few hands as harmful to the general happiness, to widespread economic prosperity, and to self-rule. Similarly, the provision of free public education was perceived by all as a prerequisite for freedom.

While communism and anarchism were quickly bedeviled and labeled “radical” and antithetic to democracy, the American Founding Fathers, as I hope to have demonstrated, were equally committed to the same goals of avoiding the concentration of wealth and power in a few hands. They were also equally committed to passing laws that actively worked against this concentration of wealth and political power—and for the broader distribution of these assets and the opportunities they provided. It is thus too easy and wrong to dismiss these proposals as “communist.”
