Nathan

After a restless night where he’d tossed and turned for hours before finally falling asleep, Nathan woke tired but determined. The previous day’s training with Caron left him feeling better about his progression as a warrior, but if Nathan had learned anything over the last couple of years, it was he couldn’t do everything himself. Building Elderwood’s army up was critical to stopping the threats that faced them. Now it was Lord Zellox and dragons, who knew what the gods had in store for them next?

While the army was in good hands, and his involvement wouldn’t increase their skills, he could help in other ways. It was time to check on his little project.

As he headed across the valley floor he glanced into the sky, looking to see in his new companion Karr-al was there. Off in the distance, he saw a bird soaring that might’ve been the nighthawk, but at this distance, he couldn’t tell. It was incredibly fortunate that they’d found a nighthawk. Having a sentient and intelligent companion animal that could tell him what it saw from the skies would be a huge advantage if a dragon ever attacks. Hopefully, they’d never be attacked by one, but after the destruction of Amradin, it felt more like it was just a matter of time before it happened. Caritha, the dragon of the girl Shayla who’d they’d escorted across Solotine, had warned them that there was another dragon on Solotine and that it might not be friendly to humans. It seemed that there were two main factions among the dragons, those who wished to co-exist with humans and those who wish to rule. It was obvious which camp this new dragon fell into. Between Lord Zellox and the dragon, Nathan wasn’t sure which enemy was more dangerous, all he knew was that he needed to prepare his people for both.

Entering the magic school, Nathan found Demarion Black.

“Ah, Nathan. I was hoping you’d make time to see us today.”

“Sorry, I should’ve come sooner, but—”

“Nothing to worry about. You’ve been busy. Bringing the refugees back from Amradin was the priority. How’s your grandfather?”

“Weak but good. He’s in good spirits. I think he feels his people are safer here. The city of Amradin had few defenses.”

“Yes, well you don’t need big walls when you have the most dangerous army in the continent. Not until something bigger and more dangerous like a damn dragon comes along. At least Elderwood is built like a fortress. But you didn’t come to talk about that.”

“No, I was hoping for an update on the manastones. Have you been able to produce many?”

“I’ve had every mage capable making them when they have spare time or weren’t working on something critical. Camille, her mother, and I have been the most efficient at making the stones. Rose is capable as well when she’s available.”

Nathan smiled. It was no secret Demarion thought Rose should spend the majority of her time at the school learning magic, but the girl had a mind of her own and spent a lot of time doing other things like hunting and training with Lord Ridgeback.
