Chapter 23

When we stepped off the helipad back at the house, I noticed a small crowd of people gathered near the front door.

"What's going on?" I said.

Hyde grabbed my hand. "Elayna, that's..."

A small figure in shorts and a t-shirt detached itself from the group and came barreling at me. I gasped.

"Aunt Elayna!" Jake said, throwing his arms around my knees with wild abandon. "You're here!"

I swayed on my feet for a moment, and not from the force of the hug. Hyde gripped my elbow and kept me grounded to reality. For a moment there, I thought I was floating away. Then reality settled like a burning rock in my stomach.

"How did you get here, Mr. Magoo?" I said, tousling his hair.

"A plane. A great big one. Grandpa napped, but Grandma played with me on my tablet. I drew you a picture; want to see?"

"Of course, I do. Run and go get it."

He was off like a dervish. Now that we were closer, I could see my mother and father, my brother and sister-in-law in the group, all waiting for us. My mother was wearing wide linen pants and a big floppy hat. She was waving. I turned to Hyde. I didn't know what my expression was, but horror clawed at my gut.

"Why are they here, Hyde? How did they get here, and why?" I sounded frantic.

"Breathe, Elayna." His face was grim, but his voice was steady. "Just breathe, and we will figure this out."

I slipped my engagement rings off, and stuck them in my clutch. I couldn't deal with my mother's reaction to that, not on top of everything else.

"You understand, right?" I said to Hyde. "You're not mad? I just can't..."

"I get it. We're good. Just breathe and try and smile and we will figure this out."

"Ok," I said, taking a deep breath and pasting on a smile. "How's this?"

"A little manic. Tone it down a notch."

"Ok."

My mother hollered something from the front porch. She was waving us over more emphatically now. We walked over. My steps were slow, and the entire time, my mind was working on overdrive. There were six men standing around my family. Most of them wore the classic bodyguard outfit--nice jeans, button-down shirt. But there was one man, tall and slender, with wavy brown hair that was observing us closely. He was wearing nice pants and a button-down shirt rolled to his elbows. His dark eyes were sharp on my face. He was watching me, particularly.

"See him?" I muttered to Hyde through smiling lips.

"Oh yeah, I got him."

"Honey, get up here!" my mother called, when we were finally within hearing distance. "There's some sort of problem. They won't let us in the house."

"I'm sure it's a mistake," I yelled back. "Let me make a quick phone call!"

I pulled out my cell phone and dialed Camilla. She answered on the second ring.

"Where the hell are you?" I muttered.

"I just heard," she said, sounding out of breath. "I'm coming up from the back of the property. I'll be there in two minutes.
