‘That’s one of my dad’s songs,’ he explained, ‘I think he’s trying to say that your own problems always feel heavy because you’re trapped underneath them; but if you think about solving other people’s problems instead, your own problems feel lighter. I’m starting to get it: before I met you, I was so self-absorbed, really, and what I did and how people saw me seemed so important. But now that I actually have something meaningful to focus on, I don’t even give those things a thought.’

I hiccoughed and blew my nose. ‘So, I should forget about trying to stay alive, and just devote myself to good deeds?’

‘No! of course we need to stop whoever’s trying to kill you. I just mean … maybe, stop questioning whether you’re a good queen, and just think about the people you’re trying to help.’
