Practicing Patience

One common struggle for survivors of traumatic brain injury is patience, and this is a quality that can be obtained through believing in and surrendering to Jesus. After a traumatic brain injury, the brain processes information more slowly. Patience is a common struggle, yes, but it may often be because conversations around you are happening too quickly.11

For example, I often get frustrated when I’m given instructions regarding how to do something, and the person teaching me starts explaining what to do next before I’ve finished the step I’m on! I cannot process two things at once like that. I need things explained to me one step at a time. I can’t handle thinking about the next step while I am focusing on what I am doing right now.

If this is true for you as well, here are some steps you can take:

Continue working one step at a time and really focus on doing the best you can.

Ask the person helping you to slow down. This does not always work because they may push you to keep working at the same pace with everyone else, not realizing why you need them to repeat themselves or speak slower. It’s hard for someone who hasn’t experienced a TBI to picture themselves with one.

Try not to be frustrated. Someone who isn’t facing traumatic brain injury cannot completely understand what you are going through.
