Native-Born Outlaws

As efforts to rectify historic wrongs helped shape public discourse on the meaning of fairness, the political reputation of Brandeis University changed from a redoubt of liberalism to what seemed a petri dish of radicalism. Two alumni accounted for that shift. Faculty members who belonged to the radical tradition tended to be foreign-born, unlike those whom they taught. Faculty like Marcuse and Miliband were primarily thinkers. But the two most important dissident alumni were agitators wanting to conduct their lives in ways that directly challenged the status quo. Neither, oddly enough, was notably political as a Brandeis undergraduate.
