Although everything you hear isn’t input for you, it may be a good source of input for others. Language input is beneficial for you when you can comprehend it, even if you need to depend on extralinguistic cues (tone of voice, facial expressions, or gestures, for example), the context, or your background knowledge. Furthermore, the person speaking (writing or signing) also uses these extralinguistic cues as a way to get their meaning through. To be useful, the input you receive needs to help you build or strengthen form-meaning connections.

Linguist Tracy Terrell calls the form-meaning connection binding, which means that you process and associate a new word or language form with a mental representation of its meaning. For example, if you’re learning Spanish and you come across the word sol, you picture the sun. The goal is to link the new word to its meaning, not to a translation from your L1. Binding happens in both L1 and L2 acquisition.
