Lex leaned on the counter, the cool tiles against her forearms, watching her sister’s busy hands at work with the coffee machine.

“How do you know if you’re in love?”

Lana put down the milk jug she’d been steaming.

“I thought you were mad with me because I was interfering,” she said. “You know, storming out and all that?”

Lex frowned. She’d completely forgotten how she’d left Lana alone in the apartment. Shit. Screw it, there were more important things now.

“Sorry,” she said, briefly. “But seriously, how do you know if you’re in love?”

To give Lana her due, she didn’t ask any more questions, didn’t press the matter of the argument. She tapped her fingers on the counter and then shrugged.

“You just know,” she said. “It just kind of hits you. There’s the physical stuff, sure. But there’s more than that. Like you can’t imagine being without them, like you’d give anything for them to be happy. But it’s not something that can be measured, that can be defined, it just is. It’s a truth, like the sky’s blue or snow’s cold. You can’t explain it.”

“You can’t explain it. Helpful.”

Lana shrugged. “Maybe that’s it though. Everything else always has a rational explanation. If you feel sick it’s because you ate oysters for lunch or because that guy on the bus was sneezing next to you. If you feel something and there is no rational explanation, well then, you’re in love.”

“When did you know that you were in love with Jax?”

There was a wide grin in response that Lex knew was just an instinct, Lana couldn’t help but smile when she thought of him.

“He didn’t come in for coffee.”

“Huh?”

Lana’s grin widened.

“Every morning for weeks he came in around opening time to get coffee. And then one morning he didn’t. I spent all day looking for him, waiting for him, and when he came in the next morning I realized. That’s it. My world, my day, wasn’t complete without him in it.”

Lex wasn’t exactly sure whether this was helpful or not.

“Is this about the professor?”

Lex rubbed her eyes and slouched down further over the counter.

“I really don’t want to argue about this.”

And surprisingly a hand reached out and patted her own.

“Neither do I,” said Lana. “Do you think you’re in love with her?”

Lex nodded, miserably.

“I was angry with you because I didn’t want you to hurt her, didn’t want you to get up to your usual tricks. But this isn’t usual. What happened to the Lex that didn’t believe in love? The Lex that took what she wanted and ran away? The Lex that could never settle down and choose just one person?”

“I don’t know.”

Lana patted her hand again.

“I don’t care,” she said. “I like this Lex better.”

“I don’t understand this, I don’t know what to do, I can’t figure out...”

“Then maybe you need to stop figuring things out,” Lana said. “Just go with it. This is all new for you, and you like new experiences, remember? You long for them. So enjoy it. Love is very, very real, Lex.
