The outside seats of Quo Vadis are a delight in good weather.

Sometimes friends take me to afternoon tea at one of the posh London hotels. Of course some of the venues are fabulous, but often they seem expensive for what they offer and their cakes not very traditional – I do not expect to find macarons or cupcakes with their sickly sweet frosting on an afternoon tea menu in England. So when I have foreign friends visiting London and I want to show them how good British food can be, I like taking them to have a late lunch/afternoon tea at Quo Vadis. I recommend starting with Jeremy’s legendary hot smoked eel sandwich with its very moreish horseradish sauce. For some other classics maybe try sharing some of those delicious cheesy filo pastry-wrapped salsify (a lovely local root vegetable) or kickshaws (mini deep-fried meat or fish pies, first mentioned in English by Shakespeare in Henry IV Part II, says The Oxford English Dictionary).

Next comes the beautifully illustrated pudding menu, which asks you the question ‘Fancy Tea? Lots to choose from. Just ask.’ Once you have decided on a tea, time to choose one or more of the traditional favourites, and you cannot really go wrong – from sticky puddings to tarts and cakes often accompanied by creams and custards – there is something for every mood and it changes seasonally, so you should visit at least four times a year. Much as I adore sitting in the dining room with its pretty stained-glass windows, if it is summer, why not ask if you can take your tea and cake to one of the outside tables and become part of Soho street life?
