There was a strict order about who was in charge. If we look at the people just below Zvonimir as director, like the oenologists, there was never a debate—he was in charge. Not that he was authoritarian, but he was an authority, an expert. The key was his having trained in Italy. He acquired knowledge there that others in Yugoslavia didn’t have. That was why he was ahead of all the others.

“I first met him when I applied for the job at Klet Brda to be head of sales,” Četrtič continues. “That was my first meeting with him, and he hired me. He was a visionary in love with Rebula. The father of Rebula. He was totally in love with it. At the time, this was the most-sold wine in Yugoslavia. The bubbly sort was hugely popular on the market. That has come back, now the market wants these fresh, young wines again.

“At Klet Brda, it was socialist times. It was halfway into capitalistic markets. There was a lot of bureaucracy. We could not regulate the prices based on demand. There was always too little Rebula. We would have liked to have increased the price, but this was controlled from above. Those days it was not hard to sell Rebula, it was hard to decide who would get it. The main public was in Yugoslavia. Zagreb, Belgrade, Sarajevo, but most of all Slovenia.”

Many of the locals Miro hired at Klet Brda consider him to be an unofficial godfather to them. For many he was the first to offer proper employment with the opportunity for advancement. Ivan Peršolja, current president of the Slovenian Sommelier’s Association, is one. “He hired me, and we got along beautifully. I received a lot of knowledge and experience under his wing, professional and personal. In Slovenia and abroad. When I came to Slovenia interested in being a sommelier I heard about Miro. Back then few people knew what a sommelier is. Right at the start, when I was invited as a member of Farmer’s Cooperative, we took a trip to Soave. That was the first time I met a sommelier and saw how they work in person. That really inspired me to train for that role myself. This trip was arranged by Miro.”

Another is Klet Brda’s long-time secretary, Vili Mišigoj. “Zvonimir Simčič was a man who never did anything with concern for his image,” he begins. “He always worked for the benefit of others and the greater good of the region. Since we are on the border, we had a different set of problems from our countrymen in the middle of Slovenia. Many of them we created ourselves, and Engineer Simčič saw them for what they were, and saw the long-term goals. Most people here were very conservative, worried about hunger and working only towards what was immediately relevant to them and their families. He wanted to create something greater and long-lasting to help the region. Considering his abilities and success, Brda farmers saw in him a light of hope for a better future.
