They moved the zeppelin into the mine just in the nick of time. The Copper Dwarves had unwaveringly continued to guard the landing zone, but as Qris and Qythlene steered the vast airship toward the gaping maw of the mine, the enemy dwarves finally recognized its importance. More thaumatech fire pounded into the zeppelin’s wards, flashing purple as the cursing, struggling trolls wrestled it into the comparatively narrow space. Copper Dwarves on the mountain’s flanks returned fire and held the attackers off long enough to get the zeppelin to safety.

Julie packed her Griffins back into the minecart train and sent them up to the war room, then made her own way there by wing. She landed in front of the council chamber just as the minecart train was clanking through the ornate copper gates. Julie marched back into the war room and a shouting match.

“My people will not be treated as a lost cause!” Sylvie’s face was almost as red as her hair. She was on her feet, her hands pressed to the table.

“We don’t have time for this, Sylvie,” Arion told her in a reasonable voice. “We need to move on to other para groups.”

“All para groups are important if we’re going to make this treaty work.” Taylor’s voice soared above the rest.

Felix rounded on him. “These dwarves have been offered parley more than once, and they show no interest in talking!”

Julie’s palms flashed hot.

Julie? Julie, no, Hat spoke up.

You’re still talking to me, huh? Julie clenched her fists, and smoke curled between her fingers. Sorry. I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at this lot.

And for the record, my silence of late has nothing to do with your antics for once. Hat sighed. Don’t lose your temper now. It won’t achieve anything.

Julie took a deep breath. Okay, you’re right. But I’m not going to stand here and watch this, either.

Julie— Hat began.

Julie strode forward and stopped beside Taylor’s chair. “You came here with a purpose, didn’t you?” she demanded, her voice rising above the squabbling. “You’re the councilors of the Eternity Throne. Do what you came here to do!”

There was silence. Everyone stared at her. Mina and Arion were smiling. Danijah’s eyes were impassive, Sylvie was still pissed, Mazi was shocked, and Felix sneered in disgust.

“We came here to stop the war,” Felix snapped. “I don’t see what a lowly major of our security force has to do with that.”

Mina held up a hand. “Hear her out.”

“She’s—” the elf began.

“Silence,” Taylor growled.

The entire delegation stared at him, but wisely, the elf remained silent. With shock, Julie realized Taylor outranked him.

Well? Hat prompted. Are you going to make your little speech or not?

“You say you’re here to stop the war.” Julie raised her chin. “Well, there’s a battle going on out there right now, so why don’t you stop it? You’re here to bring all paras back together again, so why don’t you bring the dwarves together?” Her voice rang around the war room, silencing even the officers at the other end of the table.
