In Transition
Have you ever been unemployed, or as we currently refer to it, âin transitionâ? Itâs zero fun. Well, itâs kind of cool the first few weeks. You go to the pool, sleep in, binge on Netflix, and enjoy time off. Then, after another few weeks of job applications, cover letters, and scouring the web looking for your ânext chapter,â reality sets in.
Maybe youâve also been in transition. If you have, you know how it feels to mope around at home, at the grocery store, or at the gym. The few times you go out with friends or family, it almost feels like youâre less of a human. In that chapter of your life, it is very difficult to feel encouraged or engaged.
You look around at other people and see them with their jobs for which they earn paychecks. With their paycheck they buy groceries, cocktails, tacos, and gifts for families and friends. You wonder, âWill I ever know what itâs like to see a paycheck deposited in my account again?â
Once when I was âin transition,â Iâd applied for nearly two hundred jobs for which I wasnât even granted an interview. In fact, nobody even acknowledged my existence. I could have used a little sawubona in my life.
Until one day, I received a message from a company to which I had applied. Instantly, I felt alive again. It was like someone flipped a switch. Before, I was moping through the grocery store with few positive thoughts. Now someone was interested! Someone recognized my years of experience, maybe it was my blog, my picture on LinkedIn, or perhaps my resume. Thank goodness, someone recognized my potential.
Suddenly, I felt like I existed on Earth, like maybe I could add the value I knew deep down I was capable of contributing. In a moment, I walked taller, with more purpose. I felt more confident in my abilities and capabilities. I was encouraged because someone recognized me.
When you finally get the job, or even when youâve been in a job for several years, youâre still human. You still have feelings, doubts, stresses, worries, and anxieties. When youâre a leader of people, starring in the real-life television drama that is your career, itâs easy to lose sight of your humanness. Emails donât stop. Meetings and conference calls keep popping up on your calendar. Results, objectives, deadlines, and deliverables hang over your head like pesky gnats in the summertime trying to ruin your watermelon. (Although nothing can ever really ruin watermelon.)
