~ CHAPTER SEVENTEEN ~

“Where did you get that cup?” one of the other lawyers asked Nia as she sat down at the conference table at their weekly status meeting.

Nia was carrying a mug that read: GOOD LAWYERS Never Lose Their Appeal. She laughed and shrugged. “Oh Colleen gave it to me at Christmas I think.”

“That’s hilarious,” he commented before the meeting got started.

“Nia, I see one of your bad boys is in the news again,” Phillip Anders commented as the meeting began.

“Yes, he is in violation of several points of his contract with not only the team but with us. We will be meeting later to discuss it with him and give a news brief afterwards so the press can lie about it,” she said cynically. Several of the lawyers muffled laughter at her sarcasm. “I’ve got a handle on it; it was only a matter of time before he couldn’t help himself.”

There were several other lawyers who gave status reports on the various cases they were handling and then once again they came back to Nia. “What’s going on with the Weaver Estate?”

Nia explained she was working in conjunction with her Los Angeles counterparts as well as the widow Kathy Weaver. Kathy’s lawyer Portia was helping to settle everything but it was complicated by the many layers of property and accounts that Alice had owned. Every time they peeled off one layer another few showed up, it was like an onion and crying about it certainly didn’t help.

“Is it tied in with the Brenhov Estate?” another lawyer who had been absent from several meetings asked.

“Only in the one deal. The Brenhov Estate is entirely different and is an outright gift to the heir Alexis,” she said annoyed. An unprepared lawyer irritated her no end and as he had missed several meetings this had been gone over before. Several of the associates had been handling things with her and he would be aware of that if he had attended or paid attention.

Several other cases were discussed, some Nia was involved with and some that she merely listened to so that she stayed on top of the news within the firm. It was a long meeting, they had a lot of cases pending, in various stages of completion, and a couple that had been settled. It was a large firm and they all had work to get to. Nia was among several who were glad when the meeting ended.

“You have a two o’clock meeting with a new client and another at four,” Colleen told her as she went over her afternoon schedule.

“That’s like the sixth one this week, what the heck is going on?” Nia asked as she looked up from her lunch that was spread out on the table of her office.

Colleen shrugged and smiled. She knew it was a happy complaint. “You’re popular,” she teased.

Nia laughed as expected. “Hey do you want me to pick up some more of that wine we finished the last one the other night.
