CHAPTER 12

I have never been so glad to see a car pull up as I was at the sight of Adrien’s Lexus. The past two days had been a mixture of relief and the ultimate heebiejeebies. Bill was gone, Naomi’s stuff was gone, and we spent the rest of the time together, enjoying Laure as we’d planned. That part was relief. The heebie-jeebies only showed up when I saw Eric and Camellia together.

I never saw them doing anything, mind you. It was the thought of what they were doing when I didn’t see that messed with my head. Badly. It freaked me out enough I started checking Eric for bruises. There are some things normal guys are not meant to know.

Camellia knew she freaked me out. As I saw Adrien’s car pull in and got up from the window seat in the library to go get Claire so we could greet him, she came right up beside me and murmured in my ear, “You have noidea what you’re missing, sweet cheeks.” Her hand landed lightly on my ass, just a quick swat, but I thought for sure I was going to jump right out of my cutoffs.

It didn’t help when Eric laughed, winked at me, and put his arm around Camellia. Yeah. Pure evil mischief hidden behind pale blond hair and ice blue eyes. The faintest purple mark, a perfect little diamond, showed on his collarbone.

I needed Adrien home if for no other reason than to protect me from them.

Claire met me at the front balcony, her eyes bright and happy. She’d been more animated in the last couple of days than I’d ever seen her. “He’s home, Joshua. He’s home!” She nearly skipped down the curved staircase. “Adrien!”

Adrien closed the car door and held out his arms to her. “Hello, princess.” He folded her into an embrace and smiled at me.

God, I felt breathless, like the first time I’d seen him. I thought I had his beauty and appeal firmly in my mind, but somehow my memory had failed me. Reality exceeded the image I’d carried around while he was gone.

“Oh, I missed you!” Claire hugged him tight, then tipped her head up and pressed a soft kiss to his mouth. “We’ve got new baby fish in the koi pond. Lots of them.”

“You’ll have to show me after I’ve unpacked.” He kissed her cheek. “Do you want your present?”

“Yes!” She wasn’t having an episode, but her excitement was every bit as contagious. She grinned up at him, enjoying the play. “Pretty please with pickles on top.”

“That is still appalling.” He laughed, a deep, rich sound, which sank into me, feeding some previously hidden need. He reached into the back seat and brought out a small, gaily wrapped package. “Here, spoiled child.”

She giggled and sat on the edge of the entry veranda, tearing the paper in a way my thrifty grandmother would have cringed over. I always loved making Gran cringe.

“Ohhhh.” She held up a gorgeous necklace, white and dark pink shells set in silver and mixed with stones of some sort, pearly white and a deep red-purple.
