Chapter 27

We spoke in turns, filling Brendon in on the events that had taken place in the months leading up to our return to Breakwater, highlighting our journey to the East and the battles we had endured.

“There is only one remaining path that links us to Haven,” Prince Varion continued, “and so far as we know, Raserion has no knowledge of it. The entrance is in a cave on your side of the mountains, and that is where we must march.”

Brendon rose from his seat and poured himself a cup of tea at the refreshment table.

“If you need something stronger, my Hussars have brought casks of their very own brew,” Deasun offered.

“No, thank you. I’ve been told I’m surly enough without any help.” The Lord of Breakwater stared down into his cup, frowning as he returned to his seat. “Cape Hill has pledged forces, and I will too. But even with an army as large as our combined forces, how could we hope to disable so many Monarchs?”

“Do you have any Ability, High-Lord Axton?” Varion inquired.

“Not in the slightest,” Brendon said. “We had a brother who became a Dragoon, but Dylan was born with only a marginal use of the Lift, and I have nothing at all.”

“Men like you will turn the tide of this war,” Varion told him. “We’re gathering infantry from our own army as well as from Cape Hill. Adding your militia to such a force might be the last piece we need to assure our victory. Monarchs are made for only one purpose—to destroy those with Abilities—and you are impervious to it. If enough foot soldiers break past the Monarch’s outer guard, they can disable the machines themselves.”

Brendon drank from his cup. “These reserves from Cape Hill, when do they arrive?”

“Today,” Deasun answered, looking toward the broad windows and their view of the bay.

“And when do you plan to set out for Haven?”

“Now,” Varion answered. “We have forces enough to clear a path, and we’ll need eyes inside as soon as possible.” He turned to me. “Katelyn, you’re the only one who knows Haven well enough to guide us in.”

“I can do it,” I told him, ignoring the way my head swam. This was it, the culmination of my efforts to protect my home.

“We should attempt to contact the citizens of Haven. The Lodestones are powerful. They could help us,” Rune offered.

“Yes,” Varion agreed, stroking his chin thoughtfully. “Unfortunately, they’ve experienced ages of peace. It may prove difficult to persuade them to fight.”

Brendon seemed surprised by this. “Even if they’re under attack?”

Varion drummed the fingers of one hand on the table. “I’m afraid so. The people of Haven will rely on diplomacy until the option has been exhausted and repeated three times over. That is the weakness of a peaceful people. I only hope that by the time we arrive, they’ll have realized the danger they’re in.”

“We don’t know how long Raserion has been there. He may have ransacked the entire country by now,” Dylan said, his gaze sliding to everyone but me.
