3.5.6 Data Link Layer (2nd)

The data link layer ensures that all packets of information in a physical transmission (from the physical layer) are transmitted free of errors. This layer additionally ensures that the correct physical protocol is consigned to the data. The data link layer has three primary functions, namely:handling transmission errors,

regulating the flow of data, and

ensuring a well-defined interface to the network layer.

This layer therefore provides transfer of data in a node-to-node fashion and due to its relative complexity in the OSI model, it is delineated by dual sub-layers; the MAC layer and the logical link control layer (LLC). The MAC sub-layer runs services such as error as well as flow control, while the LLC sub-layer provides services for example multiple access control, LAN switching, data packet scheduling, store-and-forward, quality of service, and virtual LANs. Commonly used protocols defined as data link layer protocols include Ethernet, IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN, fiber distributed data interface (FDDI), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), point-to-point protocol (PPP), attached resource computer network (ARCnet), I2C, and many forms of serial communication.
