They made their way back topside, and when they stood once again on the deck, Harmon looked around. “Tell me something,” he said to Kate. “Isn’t it a bit strange not to see any of Yates’s crew? I mean, to run a boat this size takes staff.” Other than the publisher’s spiritual advisor, the chopper pilot, and the security guard, he hadn’t seen anyone, outside or inside.

“Strange—no. Maybe a bit unusual. My stepfather says that he pays his crew for their excellence, not their visibility. Yates is probably the same,” she said. “What do you make of what we’ve just heard?”

“It’s an interesting story,” he remarked, non-committal.

“It complicates an already complex situation,” she said.

“Does it?”

“We started on the premise of looking for an immortal man. Now, we’re knee-deep in conspiracy.”

“We started looking for a material witness in a routine robbery, Kate. Now, we’ve heard that he’s just an average young man who overheard something he wasn’t meant to and has spent this last year trying to make money off it.”

“You don’t believe Yates’s story, do you?”

“It can be easily refuted by obtaining the senator’s fingerprints.”

“Well, you said we run his errands. We could easily justify a visit to him, in Washington.”

“Yes—and somehow Mr. Yates and his spiritual advisor knew that. I wonder how?”

Just then, the pilot started the craft, and the rotor blade began to smack the air.

“The reverend said the pilot would take us wherever we want to go. Where do we want to go, Harmon?”

“Back to Houston. Now that we know what Yates’s spiritual advisor thinks of his quest for a cure, I’d like to know what Andrew Yates has to say about his father’s illness. Besides, we owe the unethical young man a visit—to give him a chance to apologize.”

They climbed into the chopper, and a few moments later, the craft rose off the helipad. The security guard sitting next to the pilot turned around.

“Where would you like to go?”

He started to reply when suddenly, the craft bucked as if it had hit an invisible wall in the air. He heard the distinct boom of an explosion and looked out the window.

“Jesus…!” he whispered when he saw the still superheated orange cloud rising from the sea below.

“Oh my God, oh my God…!” the security guard kept shouting. “The boat blew up! The boat blew up!”

Harmon touched the pilot’s shoulder and yelled, “Take us back down. Circle the area covered by wreckage just in case….and call it in…coast guard….”

Half an hour later, the pilot stabbed his finger at the fuel gauge.

“All right, let’s go,” Harmon shouted. The coast guard’s vessel was already approaching the perimeter of the floating wreckage. They would continue the search. However, the pilot had circled the area where Malcolm Yates’s yacht had sat anchored, many times. They all saw that there was nothing left of the Nefer.
