CHAPTER TWELVE
The three of us took some time to gather ourselves in the aftermath of the gruelling fight against the dire bear. Kerka excused herself to scavenge through the mine entrance, looking for any valuables or salvageable gear that might have been left on the bearâs unfortunate victims. The awful smells coming from the mine shaft didnât seem to bother her as much, so I was happy to let her plunder to her heartâs content.
Rosalie, while healing much faster than normal, was still badly wounded. She lay on the ground while I sat with her for the time being, her head resting on my lap like a pillow.
âYou were right, you know,â she said, glancing up at me with a wry smile.
âAbout what?â
âThe potions. I can feel that my legâs almost settled back in place â thatâd normally take a weekâs worth of rest and health potions to fix up.â She reached down with her good arm to rub her broken leg, letting out a quiet hiss of breath as she did. âStill a bit tender, but I should be okay to hobble around in a little bit, at least.â
I ran my hand through her wavy blonde hair as she fell back down on my thigh. âWe can stay here and rest a little longer, I donât mind.â
She chuckled. âIâm sure you donât.â Slowly pulling herself up to a sitting position, she leaned heavily against me, the warmth of her body on mine.
Softly, almost hesitantly, she gave me a kiss.
Our lips brushed, then parted just as quickly as our eyes met.
Without another word we moved in again, our mouths entwining with one another. Rosalieâs kiss was careful, tentative yet passionate; her tongue gently caressing mine as if afraid to go any further. Her touch on my skin was soft and tender, and I held my arms around her to steady her on my lap, feeling her unbroken arm circle around the back of my neck in response.
All too soon we broke our embrace. A strange, almost abashed smile was on Rosalieâs lips as she placed her head on my shoulder, moving her arm down to hold my waist as I did hers.
âI might just stay like this for a while, if itâs okay,â she said quietly, her breath drawing slower as she drifted off to sleep.
