The phone was flashing as he got back to the Taurus. He picked it up and pushed a button.

“Hey, Mary.” He undid the top button of his shirt.

“Sarge,” the woman said, “I just got a call from the coroner’s office.”

“Uh-huh.”

“The welts all over her face and neck, the doc says they’re hives. He thinks it was an allergic reaction.”

“To what?”

“He doesn’t know, but he says the sooner we get the toxicology reports, the better.”

Palmer was silent, long enough to make Hastings wonder if she’d lost the connection. He saw movement in a second-floor window of the house across from the Nestors’. A woman was closing the blinds. Palmer imagined more blinds had been closed in Pennwood tonight than on all the nights before.

“I’m leaving now.”

Palmer cut off the call and dialed another number.

The phone rang in Karpovich’s office.

“Secretary to the commander,” Evelyn said stiffly.

Evelyn always stayed late if the colonel had company.

“He still in, Evelyn?”

“Just a minute.” Evelyn never answered that particular question directly.

A few seconds later Karpovich came on the line.

“Colonel, you know anything about latex allergies?”
