Donald Campbell’s record-breaking run in July 1964 was the last time that a car driven by its wheels held the outright record. It was broken on 2 October 1964 by a jet car called ‘Wingfoot Express’, built by Walt Arfons and powered by a 6,200lb thrust Westinghouse J46 triple jet engine. Walt was unable to drive his car due to a heart attack, so the engineer Tom Green took over, achieving a speed of 413.20mph. The attempts were not without their own dramas and surprised the LSR world with the new record!

Three days later Walt’s younger brother Art took his now jet-powered ‘Green Monster’, with a General Electric 15,000lb thrust J79 engine, to a new record of 434.02mph. His return run was timed at 479mph, showing the car’s true potential. The ‘Green Monster’ was a crude-looking but highly effective machine, due to the engineering genius of Art.
