Chapter 11
Lance tried not to be distracted by the group in front of the
neighboring cottage. The music playing from their boom box,
lousy AC/DC noise, masked the conversation, but when Lance
exited his bungalow the group of six immediately took notice.
Lance figured now that they knew they were a gay couple, they
would be seen as either an oddity or exotic, depending on each
individual’s personal taste.
Lance covered the worn out metal grill with foil, spraying it
with cooking oil, and built a hill of the charcoal briquettes in the
bowl. He lit it and it flashed with flames as the chemical
accelerants took hold. Behind him, Keefe exited the cottage
holding a glass of wine for him, the screen door slamming
loudly, causing heads to turn in their direction.
“Thanks.” Lance took the wine and sipped it. “You’re not
having any?”
“No. Not really into booze.”
Lance caught him taking a look at his friends. “You know, we
don’t have to act like strangers, or worse.”
“I feel weird.”
“They seem as if they miss you.”
“You really talk shit, you know that?”
Lance was glad his humor wasn’t lost on Keefe. Keefe may
be young, but he was very sharp. He poked at the coals with a
tong and then moved away from the heat as it radiated from the
flames, which were dying off. As the coals turned white, Lance
spread them out.
“Keefe!”
Keefe looked up at Brent.
“What are you guys making?”
“Shrimp,” Keefe spoke loud enough to be heard, “Lance
skewered some with red peppers and sweet onions we bought at
the market.”
“Yum!” Lisa smiled.
“What did you guys eat?” Lance asked.
“Hotdogs and burgers. Dave burned them this time.” Brent
stood, walking closer so they didn’t have to shout.
Lance said, “You have to use less coals. I know it’s tempting
to make a huge pile.” Lance gestured to his tiny amount.
“Shrimp would burn quickly. Oh, that reminds me, Keefe, can
you get the corn I bought?”
Keefe nodded and entered the cottage.
While he was gone, Lance asked Brent, “How’d you win the
girls back after last night?”
“Dave promised he wouldn’t touch Beth.” Brent looked over
his shoulder at his friends. “I think they’re bored and that’s why
they came back. There’s not a lot of people our age. It’s mostly
families with little kids.”
“That and senior citizens.” Lance finished his wine.
“Have you always been gay?”
Lance smiled at the direct question. “As opposed to
converting because Keefe is so spectacular?”
Brent turned beet red. “That was dumb. Sorry.”
“I’ve always been gay.” Lance looked up when Keefe
returned holding four aluminum foil wrapped ears of corn. He
held them up for Lance.
Lance put the grill on the barbeque and set the ears around
the perimeter. When he looked up he found Brent and Keefe
locked gazes.
Brent said softly, “We’re okay with it.”
An expression of conflict hit Keefe before it softened. He
didn’t answer.
Lance did. “I’m amazed people need to express their approval
for same sex couples. I guess I can look at you and…what’s the
redhead’s name?”
“Lisa.” Brent appeared sheepish.
“Lisa. I can say, hmm, I guess I’m okay with Brent seeing
Lisa. But not with Dave trying to anally fuck Beth.”
Brent cracked up with laughter. “Yeah, it sounds bad when
you say it that way.
